Two Palestinian teenagers have been killed in the occupied West Bank during a confrontation involving Israeli settlers, soldiers and residents of a village near Ramallah.
Two Young Palestinians Killed
Omar Mohammad Naji al-Nassan, 19, and Khalil Rasem Khalil Shahada, 16, were killed on September 2 in al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Reuters reported that local Palestinian officials said the deaths occurred during an incident involving Israeli settlers and military forces in the village.
Palestinian and Israeli Accounts Differ
Al-Mughayyir village council head Amin Abu Alia told AFP that Israeli settlers had tried to steal sheep from two homes, prompting a confrontation before Israeli troops entered the village. The Israeli military gave a different account, saying its forces had entered the village to provide security for police officers and an Israeli civilian seeking to retrieve livestock. It said troops opened fire at what it called “key instigators” after stones and other objects were thrown at soldiers. The military said the incident was under review.
Victims Suffered Gunshot Wounds
The Palestinian Red Crescent said both youths were critically wounded by live ammunition during the confrontation. Al-Nassan was reportedly shot in the neck, while Shahada was shot in the back. They were transported to hospitals in Ramallah but were later pronounced dead, according to the organization and Palestinian health officials.
Settler Violence Draws Growing Concern
The incident occurred amid increased violence involving Israeli settlers in the West Bank. The Prisoners Media Office said 21 Palestinians, including a journalist, were arrested early on September 3 in areas including Bethlehem, Nablus, Salfit, and Hebron.
