Regulators expand enforcement beyond websites to target financial networks behind cybercrime
Indonesia’s financial regulator is escalating its battle against online scams and illegal gambling by targeting the banking infrastructure that enables these activities, resulting in the blocking of hundreds of thousands of accounts.
Hundreds of Thousands of Accounts Frozen
Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority, Financial Services Authority of Indonesia, announced that more than 557,000 bank accounts linked to online gambling and scam activities have been blocked as part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown.
Enforcement Moves Beyond Website Blocking
Authorities said simply shutting down gambling websites has proven insufficient because operators can quickly launch replacement platforms. As a result, regulators are increasingly targeting payment channels and bank accounts used to move funds through illegal networks.
Financial Networks Become Main Target
By focusing on banking infrastructure, officials hope to disrupt the financial lifeline that sustains online gambling syndicates and fraud operations. Investigators are working closely with banks, payment providers, and law enforcement agencies to identify suspicious transactions.
Online Gambling Remains a Major Challenge
Indonesia continues to face growing concerns over online gambling due to its social and economic consequences, including debt problems, fraud, family financial hardship, and criminal exploitation. Authorities have repeatedly described it as a national issue requiring coordinated action.
Banks Face Greater Responsibility
Financial institutions are being encouraged to strengthen customer verification procedures and transaction monitoring systems to detect unusual activities more quickly. Regulators believe stronger compliance measures will make financial crimes more difficult to conduct.
Indonesia’s decision to target bank accounts rather than websites alone represents an important shift in the country’s strategy against online gambling and digital fraud. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the move highlights how financial systems are becoming a central battleground in the fight against cyber-enabled crime.
