A Russian couple’s illegal climb to New York’s most iconic antenna exposes questions about landmark security

On a hazy Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan, two figures dressed in black scaled past the observation decks of the Empire State Building, climbed the transmission tower, and did something no security camera was built to stop. What followed was part protest, part proposal, and part global news story — and it raised immediate questions about how the climb was possible at one of America’s most watched buildings.

Just after noon on July 1, 2026, two people dressed head to toe in black and wearing masks were spotted at the very top of the Empire State Building, roughly 443 metres, or 1,454 feet, above the ground. They had bypassed the public observation decks entirely and climbed the building’s radio and television transmission tower, a structure never intended for human hands. They unfurled a banner that appeared to read, “When the power of love beats the world of power the world knows peace.” Within the hour, an NYPD helicopter responded to the scene, and by 12:35 p.m. the pair began their descent, escorted down by an officer who climbed the tower’s ladder himself.

Who Were the Climbers, and Why Did They Do It

The arrested couple have since been identified as Russian nationals Vanya Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, names already familiar to extreme-sports fans. The pair appeared in a 2024 Netflix documentary called “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which chronicled their shared interest in “rooftopping,” an urban sport that involves scaling city buildings. Al Jazeera described them as ambassadors for rooftopping, an unregulated climbing sport.

Video shot from a news helicopter showed the two people appearing to kiss on top of the skyscraper’s main antenna, and CBS New York’s footage revealed the full sequence: the man dropped to one knee on a lower platform of the tower and appeared to be proposing to the woman, after which the two embraced and kissed. A peace banner and a marriage proposal, staged 1,454 feet above Fifth Avenue, made global headlines within hours.

Family Reaction Adds a Strange Twist

Perhaps the most notable quote came not from the climbers but from Angela’s father. Dmitriy Nikolau, whom Reuters identified as a Russian circus artist, reportedly had prior knowledge of his daughter’s climb.

Asked whether he was worried, he replied, “Why should I be worried? I climb up roofs myself.” He added, “I think it is normal to climb up a roof in any country, including the United States, according to any constitution.”

How the Building’s Owners Responded

The Empire State Building’s management responded formally to the episode. A spokesperson for the building described Wednesday’s climb as an “unauthorized incident,” and noted that the couple could have marked their engagement through sanctioned channels instead. The building sells a $1,000 “Happily Ever Empire Proposal Package” for couples wishing to get engaged there. In SGD, that official package runs to roughly 74 dollars.

A Pattern of High-Profile Climbing Incidents

This is not an isolated event. The tags attached to the original news reports — Empire State Building, Illegal Climbing, Protest, New York City — reflect a recurring pattern of unauthorized climbs on skyscrapers, bridges, and monuments reported around the world in recent years.

What changed on July 1 was the venue: not an abandoned crane or an anonymous high-rise, but one of the most photographed buildings in America, patrolled by a police force with helicopters on standby. That the couple still reached the antenna raises a direct question about how the climb was achieved undetected until it was already underway.

The Security Response

New York City’s landmarks draw tens of millions of visitors annually, and the Empire State Building’s observation decks are among the busiest in the country. The NYPD’s helicopter response and the officer’s ladder climb, captured on body camera, showed police reaching the climbers within roughly 35 minutes of the sighting.

The building’s statement calling the incident “unauthorized” confirms that the climb was not sanctioned or assisted by staff, and that the couple accessed restricted areas of the transmission tower without permission.

The July 1 climb ended with two arrests, a viral video, and a public statement from the Empire State Building distancing itself from the stunt. Vanya Beerkus and Angela Nikolau now face legal proceedings tied to the unauthorized climb, according to reporting from ABC7 New York, Al Jazeera, and CBS New York. The building’s official proposal package remains available to the public through its regular ticketing and events channels, offering a sanctioned alternative to the route the couple chose to take.
