New data-driven initiative aims to integrate PWD voices into inclusive digital policymaking
Sarawak is taking a decisive step toward inclusive development by exploring a digital-first solution designed to elevate the participation and wellbeing of persons with disabilities across the state.
A Platform Designed for Inclusive Participation
A proposed Digital Inclusion Platform has been positioned as a potential game changer in advancing accessibility, empowerment, and socioeconomic participation for persons with disabilities in Sarawak. The initiative is designed to leverage digital technologies and data-driven approaches to address long-standing gaps in inclusive development.
Academic Leadership Behind the Proposal
The proposal was formally presented during a courtesy call at the Baitulmakmur Building II by a delegation led by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus deputy pro vice-chancellor for research, Prof Ida Fatimawati Adi Badiozaman, alongside Universiti Malaysia Sarawak chief digital officer Prof Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim.
Integrating Lived Experiences Into Policy Design
A core feature of the platform is its emphasis on integrating the lived experiences, needs, and perspectives of the PWD community into development planning. By doing so, the initiative aims to ensure policies and programs are informed by real-world challenges rather than assumptions.
Measuring Socioeconomic Impact
The proposal also outlines a comprehensive assessment framework to measure the platform’s socioeconomic impact on persons with disabilities. This includes evaluating access to opportunities, participation in digital services, and overall quality of life outcomes linked to digital inclusion efforts.
Government Support and Cross-Sector Collaboration
Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah welcomed the proposal, stressing the importance of close collaboration between government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners. She highlighted that digital inclusion must translate into tangible improvements rather than remain a conceptual goal.
Toward Sustainable and Equitable Development
The engagement reflected a shared commitment among all parties to strengthen partnerships and explore innovative digital solutions that support sustainable and equitable development. The platform is seen as a foundation for more inclusive policymaking that aligns with Sarawak’s broader digital and social development goals.
The proposed Digital Inclusion Platform underscores Sarawak’s growing recognition that digital transformation must be inclusive to be effective. By embedding PWD perspectives into policymaking and using data to guide decisions, the initiative offers a model that could inspire similar efforts across Indonesia and Singapore, where aging populations and accessibility challenges are becoming increasingly urgent policy priorities.
