Jakarta aligns with Muslim nations in supporting Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction framework

Indonesia has taken a strategic diplomatic step by joining a newly proposed international body aimed at shaping Gaza’s post-war future, signaling Jakarta’s willingness to engage directly in one of the world’s most complex geopolitical efforts.

Indonesia Accepts Invitation to Join Board of Peace
Indonesia has officially agreed to join the Board of Peace, a reconstruction and stabilization body proposed by US President Donald Trump as part of his 20-point Gaza peace plan. The decision was confirmed through a joint statement issued alongside Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. The statement revealed that President Prabowo Subianto accepted a formal invitation letter sent by Trump, placing Indonesia among a bloc of Muslim-majority countries supporting the initiative.

Role and Objectives of the Board
According to the joint statement, the Board of Peace is envisioned as a transitional administration tasked with consolidating a permanent ceasefire while overseeing Gaza’s reconstruction. The participating nations emphasized that the initiative aims to support Palestinian self-determination and eventual statehood in line with international law. The board is also expected to provide political and administrative coordination during Gaza’s post-conflict transition period.

International Composition and Leadership
The board will include high-profile international figures, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, both of whom will sit on its executive board. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump stated that 59 countries had expressed interest in participating in the Gaza peace deal, including nations outside the Middle East that are seeking to help eliminate Hamas and stabilize the region.

Indonesia and Israel on the Same Platform
Indonesia’s participation places Jakarta in the same diplomatic grouping as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has also accepted membership on the board. This development marks a notable diplomatic shift, given Indonesia’s long-standing support for Palestine and its lack of formal relations with Israel. Meanwhile, France and Norway have declined to join the initiative, while Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that Moscow could contribute up to US$1 billion to the board using frozen Russian assets from the previous US administration.

Support for International Stabilization Force
Domestically, Indonesia has expressed support for Trump’s proposal to establish an International Stabilization Force aimed at demilitarizing the Gaza Strip. The force would play a security role during the reconstruction phase, although specific operational details have yet to be disclosed. The proposal has sparked debate among Indonesian analysts and policymakers.

Concerns Over Legitimacy and Risks

International relations analyst Muhammad Waffaa Kharisma cautioned Indonesia against prematurely committing troops to the stabilization force. He warned that without strong international and Palestinian legitimacy, Indonesia’s involvement could be seen as endorsing an initiative that lacks local acceptance. Such a move, he argued, could expose Indonesian forces to political and reputational risks if the framework fails to gain broad support.

Indonesia’s decision to join the Board of Peace underscores its growing role as a diplomatic actor beyond Southeast Asia, while also highlighting the delicate balance Jakarta must maintain between global engagement and principled foreign policy. The initiative’s success will depend heavily on international legitimacy, Palestinian acceptance, and sustained multilateral cooperation, factors closely watched across Indonesia and Singapore as regional stakeholders in global stability.
