Three crocodiles captured in a week near Kampung Parit Gantong; officials urge public to stay alert

Wildlife authorities have issued a warning to villagers near Sungai Batu Pahat in Johor after three crocodiles were caught within a week, as Malaysia enters the peak of the crocodile mating season.

Crocodiles Captured Near Human Settlements

The Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) confirmed that three crocodiles were captured near Kampung Parit Gantong, Batu Pahat, over the past week. The sightings come amid the ongoing mating season, which officials say increases the likelihood of crocodile activity near riverbanks.

The first crocodile, weighing an estimated 400 kilograms, was captured last Wednesday with the assistance of firefighters and local villagers. All three reptiles have since been relocated to areas far from residential zones.

According to Perhilitan director Aminuddin Jamin, the mating season makes female crocodiles particularly aggressive, as they leave the river to build nests and guard their eggs. “The crocodile captured last week was found about 200 meters from Sungai Batu Pahat. We believe it was protecting its nest,” he said.

He emphasized that while crocodile attacks on humans are rare in Johor, the public should not become complacent. Encounters are more likely during this season, especially for those living or working near rivers.

Close Proximity to Known Habitat

The village’s proximity to Sungai Batu Pahat, a well-documented crocodile habitat, is a key reason behind the increased sightings. Perhilitan is closely monitoring the surrounding areas, including other parts along the river, to prevent any risk to public safety.

Residents are being urged to avoid provoking the reptiles and to report any crocodile sightings immediately to the authorities for swift intervention.

Fishermen and Villagers at Greater Risk

Villagers—particularly fishermen and those who frequent the riverbanks—are advised to remain vigilant as the mating season progresses. “There is a possibility of more sightings. People need to be cautious and avoid unnecessary risks,” Aminuddin warned.

He reiterated that crocodiles will likely continue to emerge from their natural habitats during this period, and protective behavior from nesting females could make them more unpredictable.

Community Urged to Stay Informed

Perhilitan encourages all sightings to be reported via its official channels or to nearby local authorities. Increased public awareness and timely reporting can help wildlife authorities respond quickly and safely remove the animals without harm to people or the reptiles.

The department remains committed to protecting both public safety and Malaysia’s native wildlife, balancing conservation with precaution.

As crocodile mating season heightens reptile activity near Batu Pahat’s rivers, the public must stay alert, especially in known habitat zones like Sungai Batu Pahat. With three captures already recorded, authorities are reinforcing proactive surveillance and urging residents to exercise caution during this seasonal wildlife pattern.
