A disturbing two-minute video has gone viral, showing a man—believed to be the vocalist of a local skinhead or punk band—dragged, surrounded, and beaten by multiple attackers inside a Johor Bahru shopping mall. One of the assailants can be seen hitting the victim with a metal trash bin, escalating the violence.
Social media posts claim the man was targeted for shaking hands with an older individual without kissing their hand—a gesture considered disrespectful in certain cultural traditions. The video has since triggered widespread outrage and concern online.
Police Confirm Investigation, Urge Victim to Come Forward
Johor Bahru South District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, confirmed that police were made aware of the incident after the video circulated widely on social media. An investigation is now underway under Section 148 of the Penal Code (for rioting) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
“So far, no formal report has been filed by the victim or any witnesses,” Raub stated. “We urge the victim and any witnesses to step forward and assist with the investigation.”

According to posts allegedly made by the band, the assault happened after the vocalist left a restroom and failed to perform the traditional gesture of kissing an elder’s hand. Though not mandatory, the gesture is often expected in certain social or familial settings in Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Johor police emphasized the need for cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation. “No one should be punished or harmed for cultural differences or misunderstanding,” said Raub, adding that prosecuting public violence is a priority regardless of the victim’s background.
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the mall and monitoring online activity related to the case to identify suspects and secure physical evidence.
