Environmentalist accused of defamation through social media, now facing serious criminal charges.

Batam-based environmental activist and social media figure Yusril Koto has been arrested and officially named a suspect in a defamation case under Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) Law, with a maximum prison sentence of 12 years looming.

On April 28, 2025, members of the Barelang Police Criminal Investigation Unit arrested Yusril Koto at a shop-house complex in Batam. According to Barelang Police Chief Kombes Zaenal Arifin, Yusril was detained after allegedly failing to cooperate during the investigation process following a defamation complaint lodged by a local Satpol PP (Public Order Agency) officer, identified by the initial B.

Allegations Linked to Social Media Activity

Authorities revealed that the case stems from Yusril’s alleged dissemination of defamatory statements and false information across his popular social media platforms. Posts reportedly accused the Satpol PP officer of misconduct related to the dismantling of illegal street vendor stalls in Grand BSI, Batam Center, causing significant damage to the officer’s reputation.

From Witness to Suspect

Initially summoned for questioning as a witness, Yusril’s repeated failure to appear led police to take more decisive action. Following further evidence gathering, investigators escalated the case and officially named him a suspect under multiple legal provisions, including articles of the ITE Law and the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP).

Yusril is charged under Article 51 paragraph 1, in conjunction with Article 35 of the ITE Law, as well as Articles 45 paragraphs 4 and 6, and Article 27a or 310 paragraph 1, and Article 207 of the Criminal Code. These charges collectively carry a potential prison sentence of up to 12 years, reflecting the serious view Indonesian law takes on digital defamation and false information spread.

The arrest of Yusril, known for his outspoken environmental advocacy in Batam, has drawn widespread public attention. Many observers have called for transparent and fair legal proceedings, stressing that both justice and the protection of freedom of expression must be upheld throughout the judicial process.

Barelang Police emphasized that Yusril’s arrest was conducted in accordance with the law after due procedural steps were taken. Officials reiterated their commitment to upholding public order and ensuring that violations involving digital information channels are dealt with according to prevailing legal frameworks.

The case highlights growing tensions between activism, public discourse, and the use of social media in Indonesia. As authorities increase scrutiny of online content under the ITE Law, activists and content creators face heightened risks, underscoring the need for careful and responsible communication in the digital era.

The defamation case against Batam activist Yusril Koto signals Indonesia’s evolving legal approach to social media and public expression. As digital platforms grow ever more influential, balancing activism, free speech, and lawful conduct will remain a pressing challenge for both citizens and authorities across the region.
