Police uncover nine narcotics cases in one month, arrest 10 suspects, and save thousands of lives.

The Barelang Police Narcotics Unit has successfully cracked down on nine drug cases within a month, securing 835 grams of methamphetamine and 73 grams of marijuana while arresting 10 suspects in operations across Batam.

During a press conference held at the main lobby of Barelang Police Headquarters on Monday, April 28, 2025, Police Chief Kombes Zaenal Arifin, accompanied by Narcotics Unit Head AKP Deny Langie, announced the arrest of 10 individuals connected to nine drug cases. The seized narcotics included 835.02 grams of methamphetamine and 73.77 grams of dried marijuana, with all suspects and evidence presented to the media.

According to police estimates, the methamphetamine seized could have endangered 8,350 lives, based on an assumption that one gram could affect 10 users. Meanwhile, the confiscated marijuana could have potentially harmed around 221 individuals, assuming one gram is shared among three users. This data highlights the serious impact the seized narcotics could have had on the Batam community.

Clever Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Airport

One of the most prominent cases involved a suspect identified as An, apprehended at Hang Nadim Airport on Saturday, April 19, 2025. An was caught attempting to smuggle 755 grams of meth hidden inside modified sandals. His suspicious behavior alerted airport officers, leading to a thorough search and the discovery of the concealed drugs.

Syndicate Connections to Malaysia Revealed

Investigations revealed that An was recruited by a Malaysian drug syndicate and was promised a payment of IDR 40 million (approximately SGD 3,120). However, during interrogation, An confessed that he had not yet received the promised amount and had only been provided transport expenses before his arrest.

Additional Arrests Made in Nagoya District

Another notable case occurred on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, in the Nagoya area, where a suspect identified as F was arrested. F was found in possession of 73.77 grams of marijuana and 40.77 grams of methamphetamine. These arrests underscore the varied and adaptive methods used by traffickers to distribute narcotics across Batam.

All suspects now face charges under Articles 114 and 112, alongside Article 132 of the Indonesian Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009. They face maximum penalties of life imprisonment or even the death penalty, reflecting Indonesia’s zero-tolerance approach to drug trafficking.

Police Chief Zaenal emphasized that Barelang Police will continue intensifying operations against narcotics distribution, recognizing Batam’s strategic vulnerability as an international transit point. He also called upon the community to report suspicious activities and join forces with authorities to eradicate drug threats from the city.

The sweeping arrests and drug seizures by Barelang Police mark a crucial victory in the ongoing battle against narcotics in Batam. As authorities tighten enforcement and communities become more vigilant, hope remains strong for a safer, drug-free future across the region.
