Batam Port Success: Q1 2025 Shows Promising Growth Towards Annual Targets
Batam Port Business Entity (BUP BP Batam) began 2025 on a high note, recording promising operational performance throughout the first quarter (January–March). Nearly all port service indicators, including both cargo and passenger traffic, have shown significant and stable growth compared to the same period last year.
Head of Public Relations, Promotion, and Protocol Bureau of BP Batam, Ariastuty Sirait, stated that the strong start is evidence that their strategic initiatives for improving port management are yielding positive results. “We are grateful to have achieved strong performance early this year. These results reflect the hard work of our team and growing trust from port users—laying the foundation for greater growth in the coming quarters,” Ariastuty said on Monday (14/4/2025).
Steady Increase in Cargo Traffic
The growth was evident in cargo services, where the number of ship visits rose by 4%, increasing from 6,945 to 7,206 calls. Total gross tonnage (GT) of cargo ships increased by 9%, reaching 12.2 million GT. Moreover, general cargo volume grew by 12% to 2.6 million tons, and container volumes saw a 7% rise, from 156,000 TEUs to 166,000 TEUs.

Passenger Traffic Sees Substantial Jump
Passenger numbers at Batam’s ports also increased significantly. Ship visits carrying passengers reached 19,771 calls, up by 15% year-on-year. Remarkably, the gross tonnage of passenger vessels soared by 40%, reaching 4.9 million GT compared to the first quarter of 2024.
The Domestic Ferry Terminal recorded a passenger increase of 9%, totaling 981,000 travelers. Similarly, the International Ferry Terminal witnessed a growth of 7%, accommodating 1.2 million passengers.
Interestingly, passenger traffic to and from Malaysia experienced a remarkable 37% surge, with total passengers reaching 347,000. While traffic with Singapore saw a slight decline, it remained the primary international destination, accommodating 854,000 passengers during the quarter.
“We see regional connectivity through Batam ports maintaining positive momentum. Malaysian routes have significantly increased, while Singapore remains a stable international destination. We will continue enhancing our services and expanding capacity to meet growing market needs,” Ariastuty added.
Commitment to Future Growth
According to Ariastuty, these results are a motivation rather than the final goal. BP Batam is now preparing several strategic initiatives, including digitalizing service systems, expanding port capacities, and improving the comfort and security of terminal facilities, aligning with guidance from BP Batam leadership.
“Our vision is to position Batam’s ports not only as transit points but as a reflection of Indonesian hospitality, efficiency, and competitiveness. Our target is sustainable growth, not merely short-term increases,” Ariastuty concluded.
The strong growth in Batam’s port performance during the first quarter of 2025 highlights the strategic success of ongoing enhancements to port services.
These positive indicators not only reflect robust economic activity within Batam but also underscore its rising prominence as a crucial maritime gateway between Indonesia and neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore. Sustained efforts in service improvements, digitalization, and infrastructure upgrades are set to bolster regional connectivity and attract further investments, ultimately benefiting communities across Indonesia and reinforcing Batam’s pivotal economic role in Southeast Asia.
