In a significant move to shake off its notorious label as a drug haven, the region known as ‘Kampung Aceh’ in Batam, Indonesia, will be renamed, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s 100-day anti-drug initiative.
On November 4, 2024, the Riau Islands Police Force, in coordination with the Regional Coordination Forum (FKPD), announced the renaming of ‘Kampung Aceh’ to ‘Kampung Aceh yang Sehat Madani’ (Healthy and Civil Aceh Village) as part of a broader effort to promote a drug-free environment. This area in Batam has long been associated with narcotics distribution and consumption.
Kampung Aceh’ spans approximately 7 hectares and has been occupied since 2015 by migrants mainly from Aceh. Over time, unauthorized constructions have increased, populated by residents not originally from Aceh, contributing to its complex socio-economic dynamics.

Initial actions to cleanse the area of drug activities include socialization, community service, and health screenings, followed by more intensive measures such as raids and comprehensive resident registration. Law enforcement will enforce strict checks without discrimination, ensuring all inhabitants are accounted for and monitored.
The renaming and rehabilitation of ‘Kampung Aceh’ involve not just law enforcement but also active community participation. Local leaders, youth groups, and residents are encouraged to engage in the transformation process, aiming to foster a healthier community ethos.
The initiative is supported by local and national authorities, emphasizing heavy penalties for drug-related offenses as part of Indonesia’s strict anti-narcotics laws. Efforts will be coordinated across various agencies to ensure a holistic approach to tackling the drug issues in the area.
