A massive crocodile measuring an estimated 10 meters has surfaced in the waters of Temoyong, Bulang, Batam, causing a stir across social media as local officials increase monitoring efforts.
In the waters off Temoyong in Batam’s Bulang District, a colossal crocodile, estimated to be up to 10 meters long, has gone viral on social media following its appearance on Friday, October 25, 2024. The crocodile was spotted near the mangrove forests, an area known for occasional crocodile sightings, though it is not their native habitat. Captured on video by a passing student, the massive reptile quickly captured public attention as it swam away from the shore, leaving locals and authorities on high alert.
The video circulating online shows the enormous crocodile near Temoyong’s mangrove area. Initially mistaken for a small island due to its size, the animal soon started moving, swimming into deeper waters. In the video, a group of people on a local pompong boat can be heard discussing the crocodile’s unexpected appearance.

Bulang Police Chief, Iptu Adeyanto Syofyan, confirmed the sighting of the massive 10-meter-long crocodile. “I recently spoke with the village head, and it was seen near the coastal area between Temoyong and the Nenek Strait,” he said on October 25. While the crocodile has not been spotted again, authorities are actively monitoring the area for any reappearances.
Although not the crocodile’s natural habitat, the mangrove areas around Temoyong have seen occasional crocodile appearances, which raises safety concerns among residents and local authorities. Syofyan noted that the police have already coordinated with relevant agencies to prevent any potential incidents.
Following the sighting, the police reached out to the crocodile sanctuary PT ITS and the Conservation Agency in Sekupang for further action and guidance on managing the situation. The agencies will collaborate to determine safe handling measures, ensuring public safety around Temoyong’s coastlines.

Syofyan urged residents and those frequenting the area to remain vigilant and report any crocodile sightings promptly. “For the safety of everyone, please stay away from the crocodile if it reappears and report sightings immediately so necessary steps can be taken,” he advised.
This viral sighting highlights ongoing conservation challenges in Batam and serves as a reminder for both residents and visitors to exercise caution near mangrove areas.
