The Batam administration has announced $5.5 million SGD in local funding to support a new school meals program, aimed at providing free, nutritious food to over 900 schools across various educational levels.
The Government of Batam has allocated approximately IDR 65 billion ($5.5 million SGD) as a supplementary budget for a central government-led initiative to provide free nutritious meals to students in early childhood (PAUD), elementary (SD), and middle schools (SMP). Representing 10.25% of Batam’s local revenue, this funding highlights the administration’s commitment to supporting student health and addressing economic challenges for families through robust nutrition programs.
Batam’s Regional Secretary Jefridin Hamid explained that the full funding needed to execute this program is around IDR 650 billion (approximately $55 million SGD), with a significant portion covered by the central government. “Our city’s budget allocation is designed to complement the central government’s investment,” he noted, as the city awaits precise implementation guidance, which will detail execution responsibilities within the Department of Education or through School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds.

As directed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, each region is required to allocate 10% of the program’s total cost. Local parliament member Muhammad Mustofa clarified, “The IDR 65 billion (around $5.5 million SGD) portion from Batam’s revenue doesn’t impact funding for other departments, ensuring comprehensive support.”
Batam’s Department of Education is preparing to launch the program as soon as guidance from the central government arrives. According to Tri Wahyu Rubianto, Head of the Department, the IDR 650 billion (approximately $55 million SGD) budget is currently allocated in a contingency fund, with nearly 1,000 schools being assessed for their specific nutritional needs. “We’re in the process of calculating exact needs per school, with nearly 987 institutions identified,” he shared on October 25, 2024.
The program underscores the importance of both nutritional value and food safety. Rubianto stressed, “All meals must be fresh and suitable for consumption. Ensuring our students have safe, healthy meals is a priority.” This initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s national strategy, focusing on supporting families in meeting their children’s nutritional requirements.
