Anak Krakatau Is Erupting Again — Here Is Why The World Should Watch

A small island in the Sunda Strait carries one of the planet’s most violent geological legacies, and it is active again

There is a stretch of water between Java and Sumatra that has rewritten world history twice. It did so in 1883, when it produced the loudest sound ever recorded. It is doing so again now, in 2026, as ash grounds flights, closes schools, and puts millions of people on alert. The volcano at the center of it all is called Anak Krakatau. Its name means “child of Krakatau.” That name is not poetic decoration. It is a warning built into a title.

Where Anak Krakatau Sits, And Why Location Is Destiny

Anak Krakatau rises from the Sunda Strait, the narrow channel separating Java and Sumatra, inside Indonesia’s Lampung province. It sits directly on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the horseshoe of fault lines responsible for most of the world’s earthquakes and eruptions. The island is remote. The nearest settlement is more than sixteen kilometers away, and no one lives permanently on the volcano itself.

Distance from people has never meant distance from consequence. Ash from this strait can reach Jakarta, roughly 150 kilometers away, within hours. Ships pass through these waters daily. Flight paths connecting Southeast Asia to the rest of the world cross the sky above it. Geography made Anak Krakatau isolated. Geography also made it impossible to ignore.

The Ancient Giant Before Krakatau: Meet Gunung Purba

Long before the eruption the world remembers, there was a much larger mountain in this same strait. Indonesian geologists call it Krakatau Purba, or “ancient Krakatau.” Dutch geologists Rogier Verbeek and Berend George Escher, who studied the region extensively in the early twentieth century, connected this ancient volcano to a violent eruption recorded in the old Javanese chronicle Pustaka Raja Purwa, dated to around 416 CE. Ice cores from Antarctica and Greenland show a spike in volcanic sulfate deposits from roughly 535 CE, a period some scientists link to a catastrophic eruption in this same region.

Geologists describe this ancestral mountain as enormous, an estimated three thousand meters tall with an eleven-kilometer base. When it collapsed in prehistory, it left behind the caldera, the underwater crater, that would later host every eruption to come. Three new peaks eventually grew inside that caldera. They were named Perbuwatan, Danan, and Rakata. Over centuries they merged into a single island. That island became known simply as Krakatau.

1883: The Eruption That Silenced A Strait

By May 1883, Krakatau had been quiet for roughly two hundred years. Small eruptions began that month and grew steadily louder through the summer. On the morning of August 27, 1883, at 10:02 local time, the volcano tore itself apart in four catastrophic explosions. Two-thirds of the island collapsed into the sea within hours.

The scale defies easy comprehension. The explosion was heard nearly 4,800 kilometers away, in parts of Australia and near Mauritius, making it one of the loudest sounds ever documented. Ash was thrown roughly 80 kilometers into the atmosphere. Pyroclastic flows and tsunamis up to 40 meters high struck the coastlines of Java and Sumatra, destroying hundreds of villages within minutes. More than 36,000 people died, most from drowning rather than fire. Global temperatures dipped for several years afterward as fine ash circled the stratosphere, dimming sunsets as far away as Europe and North America.

Krakatau, the mountain, was gone. Only fragments of Rakata remained above the waterline. For more than four decades, the caldera sat silent beneath the waves.

Born From The Ashes: The Rise Of Anak Krakatau

In 1927, fishermen and surveyors began noticing something rising from the exact spot where Krakatau had vanished. Submarine eruptions pushed a new landmass above the surface. That first island was washed away by waves within a week. But the volcano beneath kept pushing. By the early 1930s, a more permanent island had formed. Indonesians named it Anak Krakatau, the child born from its parent’s grave.

Growth has continued almost without pause. Volcanologists have measured the island adding roughly four to six meters in height most years, fed by a steady supply of magma from below. By 2018, it stood at 338 meters, a young mountain still finding its shape.

2018: When The Child Turned Deadly

On December 22, 2018, part of Anak Krakatau’s southwestern flank, weakened by rain and internal pressure, slid into the sea. The underwater landslide triggered a tsunami that struck the coasts of Banten and Lampung provinces without warning, since it was not caused by an earthquake and was missed by existing detection systems. More than 400 people died and over 150 went missing. The eruption afterward stripped the island down to roughly 110 meters, undoing years of growth in a single collapse.

That disaster reshaped how Indonesian authorities monitor the volcano today. It also reshaped public memory. Anak Krakatau was no longer seen only as a curiosity for volcanologists. It became a recognized threat to coastal communities on both sides of the strait.

What Scientists Are Saying Right Now

Indonesia’s Geological Agency, through its PVMBG monitoring post, raised Anak Krakatau to Alert Level III, the second-highest tier on the country’s four-level scale, on July 2, 2026. That status has held steady through the current activity, meaning officials view the eruption as significant but not yet catastrophic. In a written statement on September 5, 2026, the agency reported that eruptions were continuing with audible rumbling from its monitoring post at Krakatau Pasauran, describing the activity as resembling “a lava fountain,” a pattern capable of producing lava flows over several hours.

Officials have been careful to separate today’s activity from the deadly 2018 collapse. The agency stated that the volcano’s growth since 2018 remains relatively limited, and assessed that there is currently no risk of a flank collapse large enough to trigger a tsunami. PVMBG has told the public, visitors, and climbers to stay at least three kilometers from the active crater. Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency has also proposed cloud seeding, a weather modification technique meant to trigger rainfall that could help clear ash from the atmosphere over affected regions.

Inside The Current Eruption

The present episode began building on September 4, 2026, when seismographs first detected rising activity at 4:11 a.m. local time. Overnight into September 5, six separate eruptions were recorded, sending incandescent rock and ash into the sky above the strait. By the evening of September 5, the volcano was producing ash plumes reaching an estimated 50,000 feet, along with booming sounds heard as far away as West Java and Banten.

The disruption reached far beyond the island itself. Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, one of Southeast Asia’s busiest hubs, suspended operations until 9:30 a.m. on September 6, stranding hundreds of passengers and cancelling flights. Halim Airport and Lampung’s airport faced similar closures. Airlines serving Bali, Medan, Surabaya, and several international routes reported cancellations, delays, and diversions. Jakarta’s education office ordered remote learning across all school levels starting September 7 because of ashfall risk. Fishing communities along the strait paused operations as ash coated boats and gear.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged residents across Jakarta, Banten, and Lampung to remain calm and follow safety guidance from local authorities as the eruption continued. Lukman F. Laisa, the transport ministry’s director general of civil aviation, said in a public statement that safety remained the top priority behind every decision to ground flights. As of this writing, no injuries or deaths have been reported, and no evacuation order has been issued, since the volcano itself is uninhabited.

Why A Remote Island Volcano Matters So Much

It would be easy to treat Anak Krakatau as a distant curiosity, a photogenic hazard for documentary crews. That view misses the point entirely. This volcano sits on one of the busiest air corridors on earth, and volcanic ash is genuinely lethal to jet engines, capable of melting inside a turbine and causing total engine failure mid-flight. Every closure at Soekarno-Hatta ripples outward into flight networks across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

There is also a deeper scientific stake. Anak Krakatau is one of the youngest volcanic islands on the planet, growing in real time in a way researchers rarely get to observe from birth. Volcanologists from Indonesia and abroad treat it as a natural laboratory for understanding how flank collapses build up before they fail, knowledge that came at a tragic cost in 2018 and that now informs monitoring across the entire Ring of Fire.

Finally, there is history’s own warning. The 1883 eruption changed global weather for years. A future large-scale collapse, however unlikely officials currently judge it, would not stay confined to Indonesia. It would touch shipping lanes, aviation networks, and coastal populations across an entire region.

What This Means Going Forward

International travelers and residents across the wider region should treat Anak Krakatau’s current activity as a live, monitored situation rather than a settled crisis. Flight disruption is likely to recur in short bursts whenever wind carries ash toward major airports, and travelers with itineraries through Jakarta, Bandung, or Lampung should build flexibility into their plans and check airline status directly before departure. Coastal residents near the strait are advised to follow PVMBG’s exclusion zone and heed official channels rather than social media rumor, particularly given how suddenly the 2018 tsunami struck without conventional earthquake warning.

The bigger picture is one of respect rather than fear. Anak Krakatau is not simply repeating its parent’s destruction. It is a young, still-forming volcano behaving the way young volcanoes do, unevenly, loudly, and with genuine hazard attached. Indonesia’s scientists are watching it closely, its government is responding in real time, and the world’s aviation and disaster-response systems built after 2018 are functioning as intended.
