Indonesia’s human resource skills competitiveness has climbed slightly in the global rankings, reaching the 46th position in 2024, up from 47th the previous year, according to the IMD World Talent Ranking.
The 2024 IMD World Talent Ranking indicates a modest rise in Indonesia’s position on the global stage for talent competitiveness, amidst a survey of 67 countries, signaling incremental progress in aligning its workforce skills with global standards.
In Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranks third in talent competitiveness, trailing Singapore at second globally and Malaysia at 33rd. This positioning reflects ongoing regional dynamics where Indonesia, despite improvements, still lags behind its more developed neighbors.

Indonesia faces significant challenges in education and workforce readiness. Despite a robust interest from foreign talents—ranking 17th globally—the country needs more substantial improvements in its educational offerings and labor market adaptability.
Critical investment gaps in education and workforce training are evident, with Indonesia ranking low in terms of educational spending per student and overall investment in human capital development, which are crucial for enhancing talent competitiveness.
The example set by Singapore, with its high rankings in workforce readiness and ability to attract skilled labor, provides a roadmap for Indonesia. This suggests that proactive governmental policies and investment in high-quality education and training systems are key to improving competitiveness.
