The city of Batam experienced severe rainfall and strong winds reaching 29 knots on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, which sparked unfounded social media rumors of a potential tsunami. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hang Nadim Batam has officially declared these rumors as false, emphasizing the lack of scientific basis for such claims.
Amidst the circulating rumors, BMKG has confirmed that the geological conditions of the Riau Islands, including Batam and Bintan, do not support the occurrence of earthquakes that could lead to tsunamis. This clarification comes as a relief to the residents and authorities in the region.
The storm caused significant disruptions in Batam, including damage to public facilities and infrastructure. Several trees were reported fallen, obstructing traffic in areas like Mukakuning and Punggur, and even causing damage to the newly inaugurated dome of Masjid Agung Raja Hamidah.
