IPB University imposes one‑semester suspension after probe into sexist abuse in private chat group.

IPB University has suspended 16 engineering and technology students for one semester after a campus investigation confirmed they sexually harassed a female student in an online setting.

Investigation And Sanctions
IPB University rector Alim Setiawan said on April 20 that the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FTT) imposed one‑semester suspensions on 16 students after a comprehensive review of evidence and facts. The decision, formalised on April 17, 2026, followed internal hearings that concluded the students had violated campus regulations and engaged in sexual harassment against a female student.

Timeline Of The Case
The misconduct occurred in 2024 but was only formally reported to the university on April 14, 2026, after the case began circulating on social media. A faculty team and the Campus Security, Safety and Protection Management Office summoned the complainant on April 15, then called in the reported perpetrators on April 16 to deepen fact‑finding and gather digital evidence.

Online Group Chat Misconduct
The harassment reportedly took place in a private student group where male members posted inappropriate and degrading comments about a female peer. IPB’s Director of Cooperation, Communication and Marketing, Alfian Helmi, said the university is deeply concerned and maintains zero tolerance for any form of harassment, whether online or offline, stressing that every act that undermines dignity, including gender‑based harassment, is unacceptable.

Transparency And Student Participation
Rector Alim emphasized that the process was handled openly with student participation through coordination with campus organizations and representatives, to ensure fairness, transparency and adherence to existing rules. He said the sanctions serve not only as rule enforcement but also as a deterrent and ethical lesson for the entire academic community, aiming to preserve public trust in higher education institutions.

Support For Victims And Next Steps
Before filing an official report, the victim had tried resolving the issue through a senior‑facilitated mediation, but later chose formal channels when the matter persisted. University officials reiterated their commitment to safe reporting mechanisms and to strengthening prevention, education and clear disciplinary pathways so that similar online harassment cases are addressed quickly and firmly in future.

The IPB case highlights how digital spaces can amplify harmful behavior when campus culture and accountability lag behind technology. For Indonesians, it underscores the need for strong harassment policies, survivor‑centered support and digital citizenship education at universities; for Singaporeans, it offers a reminder that online misconduct among youth demands clear standards, transparent processes and regional sharing of best practices to keep students safe and respected on both sides of the screen.
