In a significant move to strengthen economic relations, Indonesian Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto has successfully persuaded Saudi Arabia to amplify its investments in Batam, enhancing both countries’ longstanding partnership.
During a pivotal meeting with Saudi Ambassador to Indonesia, Faisal bin Abdullah Al-Amudi, Minister Airlangga Hartarto discussed enhancing economic ties, focusing on potential Saudi investments in Batam’s development and the spiritual economy linked to hajj and umrah services.
Minister Hartarto and Ambassador Al-Amudi reviewed the thriving relationship between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the need for deeper economic cooperation beyond religious tourism.

Highlighting the substantial annual spending by Indonesian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, Hartarto proposed greater reciprocal investments, particularly suggesting the development of a Masjid and Islamic Center in Batam.
Ambassador Al-Amudi expressed interest in expanding economic links, mentioning current Saudi corporate activities in the region and potential for significant projects in Indonesia, mirroring their investments in other Asian countries.
Batam’s strategic position was underscored as an ideal site for investment, with plans for the ambassador to visit and evaluate proposed land for the Islamic Center, reflecting a proactive approach to cementing investment commitments.

The discussions also touched upon future collaboration frameworks, including the possibility of constructing an Indonesian Village in Mecca, showcasing the multifaceted nature of the bilateral relationship.
