In a significant crackdown on illegal online gambling operations, Indonesian authorities have arrested a community leader for allegedly smuggling residents of Batam and Lingga to Vietnam.

The Indonesian National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP3MI) has taken decisive action against a community leader, identified only by the initial S, in Tanjungpinang for his role in a syndicate smuggling individuals to Vietnam for online gambling operations.

S, the community leader from Tanjungpinang, was detained by BP3MI Kepri officials, accused of organizing illegal travel and employment in online gambling firms in Vietnam.

According to Chief of BP3MI Kepri, Brigadier General Imam Riyadi, the syndicate involved three people, including S, who facilitated passport arrangements and prepared documents rapidly, charging IDR 8 million per person.

The scheme was uncovered when BP3MI officers intercepted two individuals at the Sri Bintan Pura Port in Tanjungpinang on their way to Vietnam without the necessary work visas or contracts, intending to work as online gambling administrators.

This case highlights a concerning trend where Indonesian citizens are lured into illegal online gambling jobs abroad, particularly in Southeast Asia, posing significant risks and exploiting vulnerable populations.

The arrested individuals were handed over to the Tanjungpinang City Police for further investigation. BP3MI Kepri has dealt with 65 similar prevention cases from January to June 24, 2024.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in combating human trafficking and illegal employment within Southeast Asia. It also highlights the need for stringent measures and international cooperation to address these transnational crimes effectively.

A community leader in Indonesia has been arrested as part of a broader effort to dismantle a syndicate involved in smuggling citizens to Vietnam for online gambling jobs. This action is part of Indonesia’s commitment to combatting human trafficking and protecting its citizens from exploitation abroad.
