The Riau Islands Province (Kepri) has emerged as a key supplier of fresh fish to Singapore and Malaysia, exporting from 10 to 15 tons daily and significantly boosting the national revenue by IDR 300 million to IDR 700 million ($25,200 to $58,800 SGD) each day.
Kepri, predominantly surrounded by waters, utilizes its rich marine resources to fulfill the growing demand in neighboring countries, enhancing its economic footprint through lucrative fish exports.
The sale of snapper and grouper, along with the Napoleon fish, which are flown directly to Hong Kong, garners between IDR 900 million and IDR 1.5 billion ($75,600 to $126,000 SGD) per export, highlighting the significant economic benefits of the fishing industry in Kepri.

Despite the economic success, the industry faces logistical challenges. Fish from Natuna must travel to Jakarta for repackaging before export, which complicates the supply chain and increases costs.
The local government, along with BP2MHKP Tanjungpinang and other agencies, is actively seeking solutions to streamline exports directly from Kepri to international markets, aiming to expand reach to Australia and America.
Local authorities are supporting fishermen by enhancing fishing infrastructure, which has allowed fishermen to upgrade from one fishing unit to multiple units, thus increasing their catch and income.

To mitigate the high risks associated with fishing, the Batam Government is investing IDR 930 million ($78,120 SGD) annually in insurance for 3,500 local fishermen, providing a safety net and boosting morale.
The thriving fish export business from Kepri not only ensures a stable supply of fresh seafood but also represents a commitment to sustainable and ethical fishing practices. This enhances the region’s reputation as a reliable source of high-quality seafood, fostering stronger trade relations and cultural exchanges between the nations.
The fisheries sector in Kepri is booming, with daily exports generating significant revenue and bolstering the local economy. Despite logistical challenges, initiatives to improve direct exports and infrastructure support for local fishermen are promising, enhancing Kepri’s role in the international seafood market and benefiting regional consumers and businesses alike.
