The film, which faced numerous obstacles, including a global pandemic, highlights Patel’s commitment to pushing cinematic boundaries.
Originally planned to be shot in India with a budget of US$10 million, ‘Monkey Man’ had to be relocated to Batam, Indonesia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift led to a complete overhaul of the production setting and introduced new challenges that Patel describes as both chaotic and enjoyable.
The decision to move the film’s production from India to Batam was prompted by the pandemic, transforming a nearly shelved project into a full-scale production on an almost deserted island, utilizing a vacant hotel as a production base for nearly 500 crew members.

Faced with severe budget constraints, Patel and his team resorted to extreme measures, including using personal funds and improvising with limited set materials. The production exemplified innovative problem-solving in real time.
The production had to navigate numerous logistical hurdles, including closed borders, which limited cast availability. This situation led Patel to creatively use available crew members as on-screen talent and to film using his smartphone when necessary.
Patel aimed to infuse the action genre with soul, trauma, and genuine emotion, enriching the film with cultural elements that reflect a deeper narrative ambition beyond typical genre constraints.
