Indonesia has successfully initiated the adoption of a resolution titled ‘Promoting Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’ at the 78th UN General Assembly in New York on December 19, 2023. This marks the first UN resolution dedicated exclusively to the Creative Economy (Ekraf).

The resolution, a pioneering initiative by Indonesia, was supported by 59 other countries as co-sponsors, representing diverse regions and levels of development. This broad support is seen as a reflection of diverse representation amid uncertain global political dynamics.

Intensive efforts to garner support for the resolution began early in 2023 through close cooperation between Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. In July 2023, these ministries held briefings in Jakarta and New York to emphasize the sector’s importance.

The resolution’s text was negotiated by Indonesia over six weeks in October and November 2023 at the UN Headquarters in New York, culminating in a final text of 38 paragraphs after intensive negotiations.

The resolution encourages UN member states and related parties to offer greater support to the creative economy sector. This includes strengthening data, enhancing research, talent development, education, training, improving access to finance, health, social protection, leveraging intellectual property, and responsibly utilizing digital technology, including AI.

Furthermore, the resolution mandates the UN to regularly discuss the creative economy issue, enhance capacity-building support, facilitate discussions, conduct research, and periodically compile guides and publications.

For Indonesia, this resolution continues its leadership role in mainstreaming international cooperation in the creative economy. This has been exemplified by the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) initiative since 2018 and will further enable Indonesia to realize more capacity-building cooperations beneficial for creative economy actors and national stakeholders.

Indonesia’s successful initiative of the UN resolution on the creative economy reflects its commitment to integrating creative industries into the global sustainable development agenda. This resolution is expected to catalyze international cooperation and capacity building in creative sectors, marking a significant step towards a more innovative and sustainable global economy.

Indonesia has successfully led the adoption of the ‘Promoting Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’ resolution at the UN, the first of its kind focusing on the creative economy. Supported by 59 countries, the resolution aims to bolster global creative sectors, highlighting Indonesia’s role in fostering international collaboration in this area.
