In a pivotal step towards sustainable development, Governor of the Riau Islands, Ansar Ahmad, has officially inaugurated the Solar Power Plant (PLTS) and the New Electric Installation Aid (BPBL) on Panjang Island, Batam, ushering in a new era of renewable energy for the archipelago.

This development is a part of the broader “Kepri Bright” program which includes various initiatives to improve electrification ratios, particularly in underprivileged and hard-to-reach areas, through the utilization of renewable energy sources.

The inauguration, which took place on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, saw six islands in Kepri being prioritized for solar power generation, promising enhanced access to electricity for communities across Panjang, Akar, Geranting, Jaga, Sebong, and Nuja islands.

The BPBL program has significantly reached 3,248 households in 2023, with a grand total of 11,898 households benefiting from the scheme from 2021 to 2023.

Governor Ansar emphasizes that solar power generation will not only supply much-needed electricity to the inhabitants but will also contribute to climate change mitigation by producing zero greenhouse gas emissions during operation.

The “Kepri Bright” program encompasses comprehensive support for the less fortunate in 3T areas (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped), including new electric installations, procurement and installation of generators and electrical networks, as well as revitalizing medium and low-voltage networks in cultural reserves and historic urban areas.

Distinguished guests at the event included members from the Regional Representatives Council of Kepri, executives from PT PLN, and notable community leaders of Panjang Island, indicating strong multisectoral support for the renewable energy drive.

The strides in renewable energy infrastructure in Batam offer promising implications for neighboring Singapore and international visitors, positioning Kepri as a frontrunner in sustainable tourism and business, potentially reducing travel and energy costs.

Governor Ansar Ahmad’s launch of the Solar Power Plant (PLTS) and New Electric Installation Aid (BPBL) on Panjang Island marks a significant milestone in Kepri’s commitment to renewable energy. This initiative not only sheds light on remote islands but also sets a benchmark for clean energy practices in the region, benefiting local communities and setting an example for sustainable development.
