High-profile Indonesian ministers visit Batam’s Rempang Eco City – an emerging economic hub, highlighting its regional and global significance.
On 17th September 2023, three prominent Indonesian ministers, including Hadi Tjahjanto (Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency), Tito Karnavian (Interior Minister), and Bahlil Lahadalia (Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board) took a joint trip to review the development of Batam’s ambitious Rempang Eco City.
The trio was spotted at Batam’s Marriott Hotel with key local officials, such as the Police Chief of Riau Islands Province, Police Commissioner of Barelang, Deputy National Police Chief, the Governor of Riau Islands, and the Head of Batam Management Board who is also the Mayor of Batam.
A previous plan had several ministers scheduled to assess the progress of Rempang Eco City, showcasing the importance the Indonesian government attaches to the project.
Minister Bahlil confirmed the continued investment by Xinyi Group in Rempang, hinting at the establishment of what could become the world’s largest glass and solar panel factory outside of China.
Batam’s Management Board claimed that local citizens are set to benefit from the Rempang Eco City project, receiving both housing and land as compensation.
Amidst a recent land dispute causing tensions between locals and law enforcement, President Jokowi calls for immediate action, suspecting poor communication as a root cause.
Rempang Eco City’s rapid development, bolstered by international investments, reinforces Batam’s emerging status as a strategic economic hub close to Singapore. Its growth offers potential opportunities and destinations for Singaporeans and international tourists, with the hopes of boosting regional trade, tourism, and cooperation. However, the recent land disputes underscore the importance of understanding local dynamics and ensuring smooth communication for foreign investors.
