Nationwide operation targets alleged online recruitment, propaganda networks and militant training activities.
Indonesia’s Densus 88 counterterrorism unit has carried out coordinated arrests across six provinces, targeting suspects allegedly connected to extremist networks operating through both physical and online channels. Reports initially differed on whether 11 or 12 suspects were detained.
Arrests Span Six Indonesian Provinces
Densus 88 conducted operations beginning October 2 across West Java, Central Java, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Riau and North Maluku. The Straits Times reported 11 suspects, while ANTARA’s English report cited 12. However, ANTARA’s report itself listed only 11 suspects by their initials, matching the 11-person list reported by other outlets citing Densus 88. Investigations remain ongoing.
Suspects Allegedly Linked Across Regions
Densus 88 spokesperson Mayndra Eka Wardhana said the suspects were believed to have links to networks affiliated with Daulah Islamiyah, a term used in this context to refer to Islamic State (ISIS), as well as other terrorist networks. Investigators said suspected activities included network consolidation, recruitment, propaganda distribution and training, although the allegations remain subject to the continuing investigation.
Online Meetings Used for Recruitment and Coordination
Preliminary investigations found connections between suspects in different regions through virtual meetings, which police said were used for indoctrination, network consolidation and other activities. Authorities have increasingly highlighted digital platforms as a challenge because extremist groups can use them for propaganda, recruitment and financing.
Police Find Signs of Physical and Shooting Training
Densus 88 also reported indications that some suspects had participated in physical training and shooting exercises connected to alleged militant activities. Police had not publicly disclosed where the shooting training took place or detailed any specific attack plan in the reports. The Straits Times said authorities had not announced evidence that the suspects were preparing an identified immediate attack.
Investigation Continues Into Wider Connections
Authorities said searches, evidence seizures and questioning were continuing to determine whether the suspects had links to additional individuals or networks. Densus 88 said the operation was intended to prevent potential violent acts while investigators examine the roles allegedly played by each suspect in recruitment, propaganda, coordination and training activities.
The six-province operation shows Indonesia’s counterterrorism authorities focusing increasingly on networks that combine online coordination with offline recruitment and training. For Indonesians, the investigation will determine the extent of the alleged network and the evidence against each suspect. For Singaporeans, the case is relevant to wider Southeast Asian efforts to address cross-border online radicalization and extremist recruitment.
