Cabinet changes reposition Jokowi-linked figures as analysts debate Prabowo’s political consolidation strategy.

President Prabowo Subianto’s latest government shake-up has rearranged several senior posts while keeping prominent figures associated with former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inside the administration, renewing debate over how their political relationship is evolving.

Reshuffle Expands Prabowo’s Executive Team
Prabowo announced major government changes on October 1 and 2, 2026, strengthening representation for several pro-government parties and bringing more than two dozen figures into the executive through the revived Presidential Advisory Board, or Wantimpres. The changes came only weeks before Prabowo’s administration reaches its second anniversary.

Jokowi-Linked Figures Receive New Roles
Several officials associated with Jokowi were repositioned rather than removed entirely from government. Former National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo was reassigned as presidential chief of staff, while former coordinating human development minister Pratikno became chairman of Wantimpres. Political pollster Muhammad Qodari, another figure identified with Jokowi, moved from the Government Communications Agency to become Wantimpres secretary.

Analysts See Gradual Political Transition
Yoes Kenawas of Lembaga Survei Indonesia interpreted the reshuffle as Prabowo gradually building a team of trusted figures while keeping Jokowi-associated politicians within the government’s political orbit. He argued that the changes did not amount to a complete removal of Jokowi’s allies. This assessment represents the analyst’s interpretation rather than an official explanation from Prabowo.

Gibran Case Adds Political Uncertainty
Analyst Arif Susanto of Exposit Strategic linked the reshuffle debate to political uncertainty surrounding Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son. He pointed to a Constitutional Court petition challenging whether Gibran’s educational qualifications met the eligibility requirements when he ran in the 2024 election. Jokowi has defended his son’s qualifications, while the legal process remained unresolved at the time of publication.

Jokowi Becomes More Politically Active
The reports also noted that Jokowi has recently increased his political activity through nationwide travel and greater engagement with supporter networks, including the Indonesian Solidarity Party, or PSI, led by his youngest son Kaesang Pangarep. Prabowo, meanwhile, has continued communicating with other political forces, including a recent meeting with PDI-P chair Megawati Soekarnoputri. Analysts cited in the reports said Indonesia’s political alignments remain fluid ahead of future debates over election rules and the 2029 elections.

For Indonesians, the reshuffle shows Prabowo reorganizing his administration while retaining several figures linked to Jokowi, leaving the longer-term political relationship between the two camps open to interpretation. For Singaporean readers following Indonesia’s political direction, the changes provide a view of how alliances inside Southeast Asia’s largest country are evolving ahead of future electoral and legislative debates.
