Singapore accelerates airport upgrades with robotics and digital systems ahead of future expansion

Singapore is preparing for future air travel growth by upgrading existing infrastructure while laying the groundwork for its next mega terminal.

Major Upgrade Announced

Changi Airport Terminal 3 is set for a major upgrade as Singapore prepares for increasing passenger demand ahead of the future Terminal 5. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow confirmed that the tender for the project will be issued in the second half of 2026.

The upgrade is expected to begin by the end of the year and is likely to be the final major enhancement before Terminal 5 becomes operational in the mid-2030s.

Focus on Passenger Capacity

The primary goal of the revamp is to improve passenger throughput, particularly during peak travel periods. With air traffic expected to continue rising over the next decade, Singapore aims to maintain its reputation for efficiency and comfort.

Industry experts noted that this move is necessary to ensure Changi remains competitive against other major regional hubs such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Hong Kong, which are also investing heavily in airport upgrades.

Digital and Robotics Integration

A key feature of the upgrade will be the integration of advanced digital systems and robotics. These include enhancements to self-service check-in, automated security screening, and even robotic cleaning systems.

Importantly, some of these technologies will serve as testbeds for future implementation at Terminal 5. This approach allows Singapore to trial innovations at a smaller scale before deploying them across a much larger facility.

Part of a Larger Investment Strategy

The Terminal 3 upgrade is part of a broader S$3 billion investment plan announced by Changi Airport Group to upgrade Terminals 1 through 4 over six years.

Enhancements across the airport include additional Skytrain capacity, expanded immigration halls, improved baggage handling systems, and infrastructure upgrades to support next-generation aircraft such as the Boeing 777-9.

Enhancing Passenger Experience

Beyond operational efficiency, the upgrade also aims to improve the overall passenger experience. Plans include increasing the number of bus gates in Terminal 3 and introducing off-airport check-in services at selected hotels.

This new service will allow travelers to check in and drop off their luggage before arriving at the airport, giving them more flexibility to explore Singapore without carrying baggage.

Navigating Global Challenges

The announcement comes amid ongoing disruptions in global aviation caused by the Middle East conflict, which has driven up jet fuel prices and affected flight schedules.

Singapore has responded by working closely with airlines to launch more than 90 alternative flights to key destinations such as Europe and Australia, helping to mitigate the impact on travelers.

Strong Growth Outlook

Despite short-term challenges, Singapore’s aviation sector continues to show strong growth. Changi Airport handled a record 70.4 million passengers in the 12 months ending March 2026, while air cargo volumes also increased significantly.

Officials remain optimistic that long-term demand will continue to rise, reinforcing the importance of ongoing infrastructure investment.

Singapore’s decision to upgrade Terminal 3 reflects a forward-looking strategy to stay competitive in global aviation. For Indonesians, particularly frequent travelers to Singapore, the improvements promise smoother and more efficient journeys. For Singapore, the move reinforces its position as a leading aviation hub in Asia while preparing for the next phase of growth with Terminal 5.
