Court rejects claim that abuse was out of character after repeated violence left lasting injuries

A former police officer in Singapore has been sentenced to 11 months in jail and one stroke of the cane after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt to his wife in two separate domestic violence incidents. The court heard that one assault left the woman with a fractured nasal bone and a lasting change to the shape of her nose.

Court hands down jail term and caning
The man was sentenced on March 26, 2026 after pleading guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his wife. Four other charges involving voluntarily causing hurt and harassment were taken into consideration during sentencing. A gag order remains in place to protect the woman’s identity, so the man cannot be named. The couple are now divorced. Court documents also did not state when the man left the Singapore Police Force.

First assault left victim with a fractured nose
The first incident happened on Dec. 11, 2018, when the man returned home drunk and argued with his wife after she found out he was having an affair. During the struggle, he struck her nose with his knee, causing bleeding and a fracture to her nasal bone. The woman later sought treatment at Sengkang General Hospital. The court heard that the injury caused a lasting deformity to her nose.

She was told to lie to doctors
As the woman went for medical treatment, her sister-in-law told her to tell doctors that she had injured herself in a fall. She initially went along with that explanation, but the doctor did not believe it and she later told him what had actually happened before making a police report on Dec. 12, 2018. That detail became one of the more troubling parts of the case, because it suggested an attempt to conceal the violence rather than confront it.

Violence happened again after reconciliation
Although the couple initially reconciled in 2019, violence resurfaced later that year. After the wife confronted him again about his affair, he pushed her and kicked her in the chest, causing her to fall. Medical examinations later showed that she had suffered a mild rib fracture. The man later called her while she was seeking treatment and pleaded with her to lie to doctors once more. She did so at the time because she wanted to give him another chance. The couple eventually finalized their divorce in 2022.

Judge rejected mitigation plea
In mitigation, the defense argued that the offenses were out of character when compared with the man’s years of service as a police officer. The prosecution pushed back, saying that as a former police investigative officer, he should have known better than to resort to violence. District Judge Cheng Yuxi said she could not accept the argument that the conduct was out of character. She noted that the charges spanned years and included both physical and verbal abuse, and that the man had reoffended even after a police report had already been made against him.

The case underscores how seriously Singapore courts treat domestic violence, especially when it causes lasting physical harm and continues over time. For Singaporeans, the ruling sends a clear message that abuse within a marriage is still abuse, and prior public service is no shield against accountability.
