New system reduces waiting time for motorcyclists at Woodlands Checkpoint

Motorcyclists entering Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint will soon experience faster and more seamless immigration clearance with the rollout of a facial recognition system.

Faster Clearance with Facial Recognition
From March 31, motorcyclists and pillion riders can clear immigration in about 20 seconds using a new facial recognition system. This marks an improvement from the current 30-second process, offering a quicker and more efficient experience at the checkpoint.

Reduced Need for Physical Documents
Under the new system, travellers will no longer need to present their passports at designated automated motorcycle lanes. Instead, identity verification will rely primarily on facial recognition, with passports still required only when necessary for additional checks.

How the New System Works
Motorcyclists must first scan their passport or a QR code generated via the MyICA app before proceeding to facial scanning. Once their identity is verified through the camera, the exit barrier opens automatically, allowing them to continue their journey.

Improved Reliability in Real Conditions
The system has been enhanced to handle real-world conditions, such as detecting obstructions like masks, sunglasses or helmets. Facial recognition also offers advantages in wet weather, where fingerprint scans may be less effective.

Expansion Across Checkpoints
Following successful trials involving over 150,000 users, the system will be gradually expanded to all motorcycle lanes at Woodlands Checkpoint. It is also set to be introduced at Tuas Checkpoint later in 2026 as part of Singapore’s broader push towards contactless immigration clearance.

The initiative reflects Singapore’s continued investment in smart border technologies, aiming to improve efficiency while maintaining high security standards.
