Deleted video showing monk-like attire during food review draws criticism from Buddhist community

Singaporean food vlogger Jazz Ang has issued a public apology after facing backlash online for wearing monk-like robes during a food review video that some viewers said was disrespectful to Buddhism.

Food Review Video Sparks Criticism
Singapore food vlogger Jazz Ang, known online as botakjazz, has drawn criticism after appearing in a now-deleted video wearing robes resembling those of the monk Tang Sanzang from the Chinese classic Journey to the West.

Ang and another vlogger visited two Hokkien mee stalls in Bukit Batok — 777 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee and Yong Heng Fried Squid Prawn Mee — while dressed in costumes inspired by characters from the story.

Video Circulates Online After Deletion
Although the original video was removed, a screen recording later surfaced in the Facebook group Complaint Singapore on March 9.

The clip quickly attracted criticism from some users who said the portrayal was disrespectful to Buddhist beliefs.

Concerns Over Religious Sensitivity
Some commenters argued that wearing monk-like attire while reviewing food trivialised religious symbols.

In Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, monks and nuns follow strict vegetarian diets and avoid certain foods such as garlic, onions, leeks and shallots.

Vlogger Issues Public Apology
Ang responded with a public apology on Facebook on March 10.

He said the video was meant to reflect a playful “Journey to the West” concept and was not intended to mock any religion.

Reflecting on the Incident
Ang acknowledged that the incident highlighted the importance of being sensitive when referencing religious imagery in content creation.

He said the feedback had prompted him to reflect more deeply on how such themes are portrayed in his videos.

The incident has reignited discussions about cultural and religious sensitivity in social media content. As online creators continue to experiment with creative themes, the controversy underscores the need to balance entertainment with respect for religious beliefs.
