Digital identity push aims to curb rising online financial fraud

Malaysia is accelerating its national digital identity rollout as online financial fraud surges, with My Digital ID Sdn Bhd targeting 17 million registered accounts by the end of 2026.

Ambitious 2026 Registration Target
My Digital ID Sdn Bhd aims to grow its user base to 17 million registered accounts by the end of 2026, up from 7.3 million accounts recorded at the end of last year. Deputy chief executive officer Azrin Aris said the company expects to reach 13 million accounts by mid-2026.

As of now, registrations have climbed to nearly 10 million, reflecting rapid adoption compared to 1.8 million during the same period last year. Azrin attributed the surge to growing public awareness of cybersecurity risks and digital crime.

Digital Identity As Fraud Prevention Tool
The expansion comes amid a sharp rise in online financial fraud. According to National Cyber Security Agency chief executive Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin, Malaysia recorded 5,159 e-financial fraud cases in 2025, up from 1,812 cases in 2024.

Financial losses jumped significantly, reaching RM458 million in 2025 compared to RM65 million in 2024. The average monthly loss from online financial fraud stood at RM38.2 million. Megat warned that fragmented digital identity systems create vulnerabilities that fraudsters exploit.

Centralized Verification Through NRD
MyDigital ID functions as a verification platform that authenticates users directly against the National Registration Department database in real time. The company describes itself as the only Malaysian platform with direct NRD verification capability as a single source of validity.

Azrin explained that the system allows users to log in through a single secure application rather than managing multiple usernames and passwords. While NRD stores the data, MyDigital ID acts as the verification bridge, enhancing security while simplifying access.

Partnerships With Banks And Fintech Firms
To strengthen identity authentication across the financial sector, MyDigital ID signed memoranda of understanding with 15 leading banks and fintech companies. The collaboration aims to integrate its e-verification technology into customer onboarding and transaction verification systems.

The company stated that these partnerships will provide financial institutions with higher assurance when authenticating customers for account openings, digital transactions, and other critical services.

Growing Awareness Of Cyber Risks

The rapid increase from 1.8 million to nearly 10 million accounts within a year reflects rising public concern over online scams. Authorities believe a unified digital identity framework can reduce impersonation risks and streamline secure digital services.

Megat emphasized that identity has become a major risk factor in the digital economy. Without reliable and centralized authentication, financial fraud will continue to escalate.

Building A Trusted Digital Ecosystem
Malaysia’s push for a nationwide digital identity aligns with broader efforts to strengthen cybersecurity resilience and modernize digital infrastructure. By anchoring identity verification to the NRD database, the Government aims to create a trusted foundation for digital transactions.

As adoption grows, MyDigital ID could become a central pillar of Malaysia’s digital economy, particularly as financial institutions increasingly rely on remote onboarding and online services.

Malaysia’s plan to reach 17 million MyDigital ID users by 2026 reflects a strategic response to surging online fraud and growing cybersecurity risks. By integrating real-time verification with financial institutions, authorities aim to reduce identity-related vulnerabilities and strengthen trust in digital transactions. For Indonesians and Singaporeans monitoring regional digital security developments, Malaysia’s approach underscores how centralized identity systems are becoming critical infrastructure in Southeast Asia’s digital economy.
