Kepri Police intercept vessels carrying imported frozen meat from Singapore waters

Authorities in Indonesia’s Riau Islands have intensified maritime enforcement after uncovering a large-scale frozen meat smuggling attempt, underscoring persistent challenges in safeguarding national food security and trade regulations.

Smuggling Attempt Intercepted in Moro Waters
The Riau Islands Regional Police, known as Polda Kepri, successfully foiled the smuggling of nearly 70 tons of frozen meat in the waters of Moro District, Karimun Regency. The operation underscores ongoing surveillance efforts in one of Indonesia’s busiest maritime corridors near Singapore.

Two Indonesian-Flagged Vessels Secured
AKBP Paksi Eka Saputra, Head of Sub-Directorate I for industry and trade crimes at the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate, confirmed the interception on Tuesday at Polda Kepri headquarters. He stated that two Indonesian-flagged vessels were secured while transporting large quantities of frozen meat and other goods.

Cargo Included Imported Meat Products

Preliminary findings revealed that the vessels were carrying frozen beef, pork, and chicken, along with other items such as bicycles and baled goods. Paksi noted that some of the meat originated from Brazil, raising concerns over undocumented imports entering Indonesia without proper quarantine clearance.

Route from Singapore Raises Red Flags
The wooden vessels, each measuring around 113 gross tons, were reported to have sailed from Singapore before entering Riau Islands waters. According to investigators, the cargo was allegedly intended for distribution in Pekanbaru and Jambi, two major markets on the island of Sumatra.

Ongoing Investigation and Cargo Inspection
Both vessels have since arrived in Batam, where authorities are conducting a full inventory and verification of the cargo. Investigators are working to determine the scale of the violations and identify the parties responsible for organizing the shipment.

Possible Violations of Trade and Quarantine Laws
Polda Kepri confirmed that the case is being investigated under Indonesia’s Quarantine Law and Trade Law. Illegal meat imports pose risks not only to fair trade practices but also to public health and biosecurity, making enforcement a national priority.

The interception of nearly 70 tons of frozen meat highlights the strategic importance of the Riau Islands in regional trade and law enforcement. For Indonesia, the case reinforces the need for strict maritime controls to protect food safety and domestic markets, while for Singapore and neighboring countries, it serves as a reminder of shared responsibility in preventing cross-border illegal trade.
