Coworkers’ concern leads to grim discovery as police arrest victim’s boyfriend
What began as unanswered messages and growing concern among coworkers ended in a chilling discovery that has shaken a quiet neighborhood in Batam.
Discovery That Sparked Alarm
The case came to light on Thursday, December 18, 2025, when Bella, a young woman from Ogan Komering Ulu in South Sumatra, was found dead in her rented room on Jalan Dahlia, Blok 6, Lubuk Baja, Batam. Two coworkers grew worried after Bella failed to show up for work and stopped responding to messages. At around 3:00 p.m. local time, they went to her boarding house and found the door unlocked. Moments after entering, they screamed and cried hysterically, drawing the attention of nearby residents.
Disturbing Scene Inside the Room
Residents who rushed to the scene saw Bella lying motionless on the floor, her body wrapped in a blanket. According to witnesses, the condition of the body suggested she had been dead for some time. Police later confirmed that the body had begun to decompose and swell, with bloodstains visible on the floor. The area was immediately secured by local authorities while officers from Polsek Lubuk Baja were en route.
Signs of Prior Domestic Conflict
Information from neighbors revealed that Bella’s relationship with her boyfriend was often marked by loud arguments. Several residents recalled hearing heated disputes from the room weeks before her death. One neighbor stated that the arguments had escalated into physical violence, noting visible injuries on Bella’s body the day after a particularly intense fight about a month earlier. These accounts raised early suspicions of domestic violence among residents.
Police Confirm Homicide
The Batam Police Criminal Investigation Unit confirmed that Bella was a victim of murder. Kasat Reskrim Polresta Barelang, Kompol Debby Tri Andreastian, stated that the killing took place inside the boarding house room. Identification of the victim initially faced challenges due to the absence of personal documents at the scene, but police later confirmed her identity through forensic and investigative efforts. Bella was known to work at a restaurant in the Penuin area, not far from her residence.
Suspect Arrested Within Hours
Police acted swiftly following the discovery. Head of Criminal Investigation at Polsek Lubuk Baja, Iptu Noval Adimas Ardianto, confirmed that the suspect, identified by the initials Br, was arrested within hours of the report. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was Bella’s boyfriend and a person close to the victim. He is currently being detained and questioned as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Motive Still Under Investigation
As of Thursday night, police had not disclosed the motive behind the killing. Kompol Debby emphasized that investigators are still gathering statements and evidence. The suspect was arrested only hours before the official statement, and authorities urged the public to remain patient as the investigation continues. The case is being handled jointly by Polsek Lubuk Baja and Polresta Barelang.
Family and Community in Mourning
Bella’s death has left her family devastated. Relatives who saw her body at the hospital reportedly broke down after noticing multiple injuries. Family members said they had remained in regular contact with Bella and never suspected her life was in danger. She had lived in the boarding house for about two years and was described by neighbors as friendly and hardworking.
This case has reignited concerns about domestic violence and personal safety among migrant workers and young women living independently in urban areas like Batam. As police continue their investigation, the tragedy underscores the need for stronger awareness, early intervention, and community vigilance across Indonesia and neighboring Singapore, where cross-border work and migration remain deeply interconnected.
