Malaysia outperforms global averages with notable gains in education, sustainability and urban development.

Malaysia is making significant strides toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, with new national data showing remarkable progress across education, sustainability and social development. The pace places the country far ahead of global averages, signaling a strong trajectory as the decade approaches its midpoint.

Malaysia Surpasses Global SDG Averages
Malaysia is projected to achieve 49 percent of its 169 Sustainable Development Goals targets by 2030, according to Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. This performance far exceeds the 2025 global completion average of 18 percent, reflecting Malaysia’s steady advancement toward the Agenda 2030 commitments undertaken with 193 countries.

Top Achievements in Education and Sustainability
Two goals stand out in the latest assessment. SDG 4 on quality education reached a 70 percent achievement rate, driven by comprehensive access to schooling. Meanwhile, SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production recorded a 64 percent performance, supported by higher recycling rates and improved hazardous waste management.

Eight Goals Exceed National Average
Beyond these top performers, eight additional goals surpassed the national average. These include gender equality, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities and partnerships for the goals. The advances point to broad-based development efforts across social, economic and environmental sectors.

Data-Driven Monitoring Strengthens Progress

Malaysia’s benchmarks rely on a monitoring framework developed by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The framework measures progress through 17 goals, 169 targets and 244 indicators, offering comprehensive oversight of socio-economic and environmental outcomes.

Strengthening Urban Sustainability and Global Linkages
Sustainable cities and communities were highlighted as key contributors to the nation’s progress. Improved urban planning, cleaner energy options and strengthened international partnerships have helped anchor Malaysia’s SDG performance.

Advancing Toward a Shared 2030 Vision
Malaysia’s achievements reaffirm its commitment to the “Leaving No One Behind” principle at the heart of the SDGs. With education, sustainability and community development leading the way, the nation continues to position itself as a regional example in achieving balanced, inclusive development.

Malaysia’s consistent progress signals broader implications for both Indonesians and Singaporeans watching regional development trends. Strong advancements in education, sustainability and urban infrastructure point to a future shaped by collaboration, resilience and shared regional aspirations.
