More than ten years after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a Beijing court has ruled on long-pending compensation claims, marking a significant milestone for families still seeking closure.

A Beijing court has ordered Malaysia Airlines to pay more than 2.9 million yuan (approx. US$410,240) in compensation to the families of eight passengers from Flight MH370. The Chaoyang District People’s Court issued the ruling last Friday, covering funeral costs, emotional distress, and related losses.
Majority of Lawsuits Settled, but Cases Remain
Of the original 78 cases filed by relatives after the 2014 disappearance, 47 have been withdrawn following out-of-court settlements with Malaysia Airlines and its international arm. Another 23 remain under trial. According to the court, these families either have not completed or have not applied for the legal declaration of death required for compensation.
A Decade Without Answers
Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people, vanished from radar on March 8, 2014, while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Despite the most extensive search effort in aviation history, the aircraft has never been found. Two-thirds of the passengers were Chinese nationals, with others hailing from Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, India, the United States, the Netherlands, and France.
Renewed Search Announced for December
Malaysia’s transport ministry recently confirmed that the search for MH370 will resume on December 30. The operation will last 55 days and focus on targeted zones assessed to have the highest likelihood of locating the aircraft. While the exact search coordinates were not disclosed, the announcement was welcomed by China’s foreign ministry and families of the victims.
Legal Recognition of Loss
The eight passengers whose families received compensation have been formally declared deceased, enabling the court to issue financial awards. For many families still awaiting legal closure, the ongoing trials will determine future compensation eligibility.
