Singapore allocates emergency aid to five national societies battling severe regional floods.

Extreme weather has battered Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, triggering deadly floods, mass displacement and widespread infrastructure damage. In response, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is activating regional support to help frontline agencies deliver urgent relief and keep communities safe.

Regional Aid Package Activated
The Singapore Red Cross announced on December 1 that it is channeling $250,000 to five partner national societies responding to climate-driven disasters. Each partner—Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam—will receive $50,000 to strengthen frontline rescue, relief and recovery operations.

Floods and Landslides Devastate Communities
Severe monsoon rains, tropical storms and cyclones have swept across the region in recent weeks, causing casualties and large-scale destruction. In Indonesia alone, more than 400 people have died in Aceh and Northern Sumatra, underscoring the scale of the crisis. Homes, transportation routes and essential services have been severely disrupted across multiple countries.

Frontline Responders Work Around the Clock
Indonesia’s Palang Merah Indonesia, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, the Thai Red Cross and the Vietnam Red Cross are already operating through extensive provincial and district networks. Their teams are running evacuation shelters, conducting search-and-rescue missions, restoring hygiene systems, distributing food and water, and clearing debris from affected neighbourhoods.

Assistance for Stranded Tourists
In Thailand, the Thai Red Cross has also been coordinating with local authorities in Hat Yai to assist communities dealing with flood damage. This includes providing support to Singaporean tourists stranded in hard-hit zones, ensuring they receive safe passage and essential services.

Sri Lanka Mobilises 25-Branch Emergency Network
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has activated its full network of 25 branches, deploying trained disaster response teams and volunteers. Their work includes first aid, rescue support, essential-item deliveries, medical assistance and rapid-needs assessments as floodwaters continue to rise across multiple districts.

Singapore Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Solidarity
SRC chief and secretary-general Benjamin William said communities across the region are enduring deep disruption due to climate-driven disasters. He emphasised that sister national societies are delivering lifesaving assistance on the ground and that Singapore remains committed to supporting these efforts through coordinated humanitarian partnerships.

The Singapore Red Cross’ swift support reflects growing regional solidarity amid intensifying climate emergencies. As Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka confront mounting humanitarian pressures, coordinated cross-border assistance remains vital for saving lives, stabilising affected areas and strengthening long-term resilience for Indonesians, Singaporeans and neighbouring communities.
