Jeju’s beef and pork enter Singapore after a decade of negotiations and safety reviews.
South Korea has officially sent its first shipment of Jeju-produced beef and pork to Singapore, marking a major breakthrough after years of regulatory discussions and international food-safety assessments.
A Milestone for Jeju’s Livestock Industry
South Korea delivered its first batch of Jeju-produced beef and pork to Singapore following a decade of negotiations. The shipment, totaling 4.5 tons of premium hanwoo and pork, is valued at 280 million won, which equals approximately SGD 22,400. Government officials confirmed the delivery on Monday, highlighting its significance for Korea’s livestock sector.
Landmark Approval After Years of Work
This export marks the first time Singapore has directly evaluated and approved livestock products from Jeju. The approval came after Seoul and Singapore signed an export agreement during the APEC Summit in Gyeongju last month. Since 2016, both governments have collaborated closely to build aligned hygiene, inspection and quarantine frameworks.
Six Jeju Facilities Cleared for Export
To support the partnership, six slaughtering and processing facilities on Jeju Island have been designated as export-ready. This ensures that the supply chain meets Singapore’s strict food-safety requirements, which are among the most rigorous in Asia. The achievement reinforces Jeju’s readiness to supply premium meat to global markets.
Global Recognition Strengthens Jeju’s Position
Jeju’s livestock industry gained a major advantage in May when the World Organization for Animal Health recognized the island as free of foot-and-mouth disease. This international certification played a key role in easing Singapore’s safety concerns and enabling the agreement to move forward.
Singapore as a Strategic Growth Market
Singapore is now Korea’s eighth overseas market for hanwoo, joining destinations such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and the United Arab Emirates. Korean officials noted that access to Singapore’s high-standard market boosts Korea’s credibility and supports expansion across Southeast Asia.
Market Prospects and Government Commitments
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety emphasized that entering Singapore’s fast-growing meat market will improve Korea’s competitiveness across production, processing and distribution. Officials also pledged continued efforts to raise food-safety benchmarks and open new export destinations.
Industry Impact Beyond Jeju
This first shipment is expected to strengthen Korea’s agricultural reputation and deepen economic links between Korea and Singapore. The successful partnership sets a foundation for expanded trade opportunities in the region.
The milestone signals rising trust in Korea’s livestock standards and opens the door for more diversified food trade between Korea and Singapore. As demand for premium meat grows across Asia, Jeju’s successful entry into the Singaporean market enhances regional market confidence and offers new economic opportunities for both countries.
