BP Batam reports remarkable double-digit growth across container, cargo, and vessel indicators in 2025.

Batam’s logistics sector is on a powerful upswing. From January to September 2025, the Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) recorded double-digit growth across key logistics indicators, reinforcing Batam’s position as a leading maritime and logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

Strong Performance Across Logistics Indicators

BP Batam’s Directorate of Port Management reported that all three key indicators — container throughput, general cargo, and vessel calls — achieved double-digit growth during the first nine months of 2025. This marks a milestone in Batam’s ongoing transformation into an efficient and high-performing regional logistics hub.

According to BP Batam Chairman Amsakar Achmad, “This double-digit growth across all main indicators reflects Batam’s strategic port position and our continued improvements in service performance.”

Container Volume Rises 18% Driven by Batu Ampar Terminal

Container throughput reached 583,267 TEUs, an 18% increase year-on-year. The Batu Ampar Container Terminal — which launched its Commercial Phase 2 in early September 2025 — contributed 65% of total volume and saw a remarkable 24% rise in throughput.

  • Imports surged 27% (226,576 TEUs), driven by rising industrial demand.
  • Exports grew 19% (216,203 TEUs), reflecting solid trade resilience.

These numbers underscore Batam’s growing role as a critical logistics link in Indonesia’s supply chain, connecting domestic industries to regional and global markets.

General Cargo Records 18% Jump

The general cargo sector also demonstrated strong momentum, with 8.6 million tons handled from January to September — up 18% compared to 2024. The Kabil Liquid Bulk Terminal and Batu Ampar Terminal stood out as top contributors.

Domestic logistics dominated the segment, with 25% growth in domestic general cargo volume, highlighting Batam’s role as an efficient regional distribution hub serving both industrial and consumer markets.

Ship Calls and Tonnage Expand

Director of Port Management Benny Syahroni noted that 22,509 cargo vessel calls were recorded during the nine-month period, a 6% increase year-on-year. Total vessel gross tonnage climbed 11% to 39 million GT, signaling the port’s growing ability to accommodate larger and more frequent shipments.

Batu Ampar Port led with 6,139 ship calls and 7.8 million GT, illustrating its importance as the gateway for Batam’s expanding trade and industrial activity.

Collaboration and Digital Transformation Drive Growth

Both Amsakar and Benny credited this performance to collaboration among BP Batam, CIQP (Customs, Immigration, Quarantine, and Port Authority), and stakeholders. They emphasized that digital transformation and efficiency upgrades have been pivotal in maintaining Batam’s competitiveness in the fast-evolving global logistics landscape.

“This achievement aligns with the leadership’s directive to strengthen Batam’s logistics ecosystem through innovation, digitalization, and service integration,” Amsakar said.

A Rising Hub for Regional Trade

Batam’s logistics surge reflects broader economic trends in the Indonesia–Singapore–Malaysia growth triangle. As global trade routes shift and ASEAN economies integrate, Batam’s strategic location and expanding port capacity are setting the foundation for sustained regional growth and investment attraction.

Batam’s remarkable logistics growth from January to September 2025 underscores its rising influence as Indonesia’s western logistics powerhouse. With enhanced port operations, digital integration, and strong domestic demand, Batam is poised to strengthen its role as a key bridge for regional trade and economic collaboration across the Riau Islands, Singapore, and beyond.
