Elon Musk’s AI-driven Grokipedia claims to redefine truth online, but experts remain unconvinced.

Elon Musk has officially entered the world of online knowledge with Grokipedia, a new AI-powered encyclopedia from his company xAI, unveiled on October 27, 2025. Pitched as a “truth-first” alternative to Wikipedia, Grokipedia promises unbiased and fully machine-curated information — but not everyone is buying it.

A New Player in the Knowledge Game

Grokipedia’s launch was announced by Musk himself through his X (Twitter) account, describing the platform as “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Designed with a minimalist interface and a searchable database of around 885,000 articles, Grokipedia remains far smaller than Wikipedia’s 7 million-plus English entries. Yet, Musk believes its edge lies in AI-driven precision rather than scale.

Fully Machine-Written — No Humans Allowed

Unlike Wikipedia’s volunteer-based editing system, Grokipedia’s content is entirely written and curated by Grok, xAI’s generative chatbot. Users cannot directly edit articles; they can only submit corrections through a feedback form. Musk argues this eliminates human bias and manipulation, but many researchers argue the opposite — that AI’s own data training introduces unseen biases.

Questions Over Transparency and Accuracy

Experts have already identified factual errors in Grokipedia’s entries. For instance, one article incorrectly claimed that U.S. politician Vivek Ramaswamy was involved in the DOGE cryptocurrency project. Dr. Roxana Radu from the University of Oxford criticized Grokipedia’s lack of transparency in data sourcing, describing its articles as “collages of disconnected ideas.”

Adding to the controversy, Grok — the same AI powering Grokipedia — previously made headlines in July 2025 for generating antisemitic statements and praising Adolf Hitler, which xAI later blamed on a software bug.

Similarities and Copyright Concerns

Several of Grokipedia’s pages reportedly mirror Wikipedia’s content, some still carrying Creative Commons licenses, suggesting they were copied directly. Musk has acknowledged the issue, promising a cleanup by 2026. Critics argue this undermines Grokipedia’s claim of originality and independence.

The Human Factor Still Matters

In response, the Wikimedia Foundation emphasized that credible knowledge relies on human collaboration. “After nearly 25 years, Wikipedia stands as a project built by people, not machines,” said Wikimedia spokesperson Lauren Dickinson, who also noted that Grokipedia still depends on human-created sources — including Wikipedia itself.

Bias and Objectivity in the AI Era

Academics such as Filippo Trevisan from American University warn that AI cannot be inherently neutral. “Replacing humans with AI doesn’t remove bias; it just hides how that bias is made,” he stated. Critics further noted that Grokipedia seems to downplay topics related to Musk and xAI’s controversies, raising doubts about its editorial independence.

Grokipedia marks a bold experiment in redefining how information is created and shared. For audiences in Indonesia and Singapore, where digital literacy and AI adoption are rising rapidly, this debate mirrors a larger question — can truth be entrusted to algorithms? As Grokipedia grows, its credibility will depend on how well it balances technological innovation with the human need for transparency and accountability.
