Nine suspects arrested across Johor as police solve 32 burglary and vehicle theft cases.

A major criminal network operating across Johor since 2022 has been brought down after police arrested nine members of the notorious “Gang Richi.” The group, led by a 21-year-old local mastermind, is believed responsible for a series of burglaries and vehicle thefts spanning multiple districts.

Nine Arrested in Coordinated Raids

Between September 21 and 28, 2025, Johor police carried out a series of coordinated raids across the state, resulting in the arrest of nine suspects — seven men and two women aged between 21 and 37. Johor Deputy Police Chief Datuk Abdul Latiff Mehat confirmed that all were locals. “With these arrests, we believe 32 burglary and vehicle theft cases across Johor have been solved,” he said during a press conference at the Johor police headquarters.

A 21-Year-Old Mastermind Behind the Crimes

Investigations revealed that the syndicate’s leader, a 21-year-old man, masterminded the gang’s operations. He personally selected the homes or shophouses to target and directed members to carry out the burglaries. “The group would break into premises that also had vehicles on site, which they would steal and later use to commit further crimes,” Abdul Latiff explained.

Gang Richi’s operations covered Johor Bahru, Seri Alam, Kulai, Pontian, Kluang, Batu Pahat, and Muar. The group favored older car models such as Proton Wira, Proton Satria, and Perodua Kancil — vehicles lacking advanced anti-theft systems.

Seasoned Offenders Treating Crime as a Profession

Authorities discovered that eight of the nine suspects had prior criminal records for similar offences, suggesting that crime had become a habitual pursuit. The gang targeted both urban and rural properties, often selecting shophouses and homes located in quiet areas with minimal security.

According to police data, the syndicate’s activities resulted in 15 shophouse break-ins, eight residential burglaries, and nine vehicle thefts — collectively causing losses exceeding RM100,000.

Widespread Impact Across Johor

The cases linked to Gang Richi span multiple districts — including one in Johor Bahru, six in Iskandar Puteri, nine in Seri Alam, four in Kulai, five in Kluang, three each in Batu Pahat and Pontian, and one in Muar. The police are also investigating whether the suspects were involved in two similar crimes reported in Kemaman, Terengganu.

Prosecution and Legal Action Underway

Following their capture, 32 investigation papers were submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office. Of these, 18 have already been approved for prosecution. The charges include housebreaking under Section 457 of the Penal Code, vehicle theft and possession of stolen property under Sections 379A and 411, and criminal trespass under Section 448.

“One suspect has already been charged in the Kluang Magistrate’s Court, while five others are being charged in Johor Bahru, Kulai, and Batu Pahat,” Abdul Latiff confirmed.

Restoring Public Confidence in Johor’s Safety

The dismantling of Gang Richi marks a major success for Johor police in combating organized crime. By taking down a network that had been operating for over three years, authorities have not only resolved dozens of pending cases but also reassured residents that security measures across the state are strengthening. The crackdown underscores the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety and curbing youth involvement in criminal syndicates.

Johor’s success in dismantling Gang Richi reflects the effectiveness of targeted policing and intelligence-led investigations. The arrests send a clear warning to criminal networks that law enforcement in Malaysia remains vigilant and uncompromising. As the state continues to fortify its crime prevention strategies, residents can look forward to safer communities and a stronger sense of security.
