A deadly attack in Mount Austin leaves two dead and two injured, shaking the busy Johor Bahru district
Johor Bahru’s popular Mount Austin area turned into a crime scene on Oct 20 after a Myanmar man allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death before taking his own life. The shocking murder-suicide left two others injured and has sparked renewed concern over domestic violence among migrant communities in Malaysia.
Violent Incident in Mount Austin
According to Johor Bahru South District police chief Raub Selamat, officers were alerted to a violent confrontation at Jalan Austin Heights 8/3 around 7:40pm on Oct 20. The area, known for its lively mix of restaurants and karaoke joints, was thrown into chaos as residents witnessed the horrific attack unfold.
The victim, a 33-year-old Myanmar woman, was found with multiple stab and slash wounds inside a workers’ hostel. The suspect — believed to be her former boyfriend, also from Myanmar — was discovered dead nearby with a 24cm-long knife beside his body.
Witnesses and Casualties
Two individuals, a 23-year-old foreign woman and a 27-year-old Malaysian man, sustained injuries while attempting to intervene and stop the assault. Both were rushed to hospital and are currently receiving treatment. Police confirmed that their conditions are stable.
Evidence and Ongoing Investigation
Photos circulating online showed the suspect lying in a pool of blood at the bottom of a stairwell, drawing a crowd of shocked bystanders. Authorities have urged the public not to share graphic images out of respect for the victims and their families.
Johor Bahru police have classified the case as murder and are continuing investigations to determine the exact motive. Early findings suggest the attack stemmed from a personal dispute, but officers are not ruling out other contributing factors.
Broader Pattern of Violence
The incident came less than a week after a fatal school stabbing in Petaling Jaya, where a 16-year-old girl was killed by a classmate. The back-to-back tragedies have prompted public calls for stronger preventive measures and better mental health support in Malaysia.
Community and Law Enforcement Response
Police chief Raub Selamat assured that authorities are working closely with Myanmar’s embassy to assist with the identification and repatriation process. He also emphasized the importance of early reporting in domestic conflict cases to prevent similar tragedies.
The Mount Austin murder-suicide underscores the fragile safety conditions faced by migrant workers in Malaysia’s urban centers. Beyond the immediate loss of life, the tragedy highlights deeper issues of domestic violence and mental distress — problems that require collective attention from law enforcement, community leaders, and policymakers across Southeast Asia.
