Pyongyang’s latest missile launch comes a week before world leaders, including Trump and Xi, meet in South Korea.

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea early Wednesday, marking its first launch in months and heightening regional tensions ahead of next week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

Missiles Fired Ahead of High-Level Talks

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired around 8:10 a.m. (local time) from an area south of Pyongyang, flying roughly 350 kilometres (217 miles) before landing in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). The launch comes just one week before U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other world leaders arrive in Gyeongju for the APEC summit.

Seoul’s military said it detected “several projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles,” and has since stepped up monitoring and maintained readiness in coordination with the U.S. and Japan.

A Strategic Timing

This latest launch is North Korea’s first under South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, who took office in June, and its first missile activity since May 8, when Pyongyang fired several short-range projectiles. Analysts believe the timing is deliberate, aimed at projecting military defiance and reinforcing North Korea’s nuclear status ahead of the high-profile summit.

The Associated Press reported that experts had warned of a potential provocative test to draw attention and assert dominance on the regional stage as world leaders converge nearby.

Kim’s Expanding Arsenal

Earlier this month, Kim Jong Un unveiled the new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) — described by state media as the nation’s “most powerful” weapon — during a grand military parade in Pyongyang. The event marked the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea and was attended by senior officials from Russia and China.

Kim also supervised the ninth and final test of a solid-fuel engine designed for long-range nuclear missiles in September, signaling that a full test-fire could be imminent. North Korea claims the Hwasong-20’s strike range “knows no bounds.”

Diplomatic Posturing and Renewed Tensions

The missile launch further complicates diplomatic efforts between Washington and Pyongyang. Trump, who met Kim multiple times during his first term, recently expressed hope for another meeting “possibly this year.”

However, North Korean state media has reiterated that Kim is only open to talks if the U.S. abandons its “delusional” demand for the North to relinquish its nuclear arsenal. Pyongyang continues to justify its weapons program as essential for national defence against what it calls hostile acts by the U.S. and South Korea.

Regional Implications

The launch underscores the fragility of security in Northeast Asia. With China’s growing influence, Russia’s presence at regional events, and Washington’s renewed Indo-Pacific focus, Pyongyang’s show of force signals a determination to remain central in regional geopolitics — even through provocation.

For South Korea, the timing challenges President Lee’s ability to balance diplomacy and deterrence as global attention turns to Gyeongju.

North Korea’s missile launch serves as both a warning and a statement of intent — a signal to global powers that it will not be sidelined during pivotal diplomatic gatherings. As the APEC summit nears, the region braces for heightened tension, testing the delicate equilibrium between deterrence and diplomacy in East Asia’s evolving security landscape.
