OpenAI’s plan to permit erotica for verified adults sparks debate on digital freedom, mental health, and child safety.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has defended his company’s controversial decision to allow erotica content for verified adults on ChatGPT, saying the company is “not the elected moral police of the world.” The move, set to take effect in December 2025, aims to make ChatGPT more human-like and user-driven, while reigniting debates on AI ethics and youth protection.
Treating Adult Users “Like Adults”
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Altman said OpenAI will soon “safely relax” restrictions on ChatGPT’s content, including written erotica, under a new age-gating system for verified adult users. “We care very much about the principle of treating adult users like adults,” he said, emphasizing that the chatbot would still prohibit harmful or exploitative material.
Altman drew parallels to R-rated movies, suggesting that AI should similarly respect age-appropriate boundaries. The decision, he added, follows months of internal testing to mitigate mental health risks associated with AI companionship.
Backlash Over AI and Erotica
The announcement sparked immediate backlash online and from advocacy groups. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) called on OpenAI to reverse the decision, warning that “sexualized AI chatbots are inherently risky” and could cause real mental health harm in the absence of clear industry standards.
Critics also questioned how OpenAI plans to ensure minors cannot access the adult-only features. Jenny Kim, a partner at Boies Schiller Flexner, said, “How are they going to make sure children aren’t able to access portions of ChatGPT that provide erotica?”
The debate comes amid growing scrutiny from regulators in the United States and United Kingdom, where AI-generated explicit material faces complex legal and ethical challenges under the Online Safety Act and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigations.
Addressing Mental Health and Legal Risks
OpenAI’s relaxed policy follows a difficult year marked by legal and ethical challenges. The company was sued by the parents of a 16-year-old U.S. teen who took his own life after reportedly discussing suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed earlier this year, accuses OpenAI of negligence in safeguarding vulnerable users.
In response, the company has since launched parental controls, developed an age-prediction system for users under 18, and established an AI Mental Health Advisory Council consisting of eight independent experts to guide safety policy.
“We’ve made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to protect users,” Altman explained, “but now that we have new tools and understand the issues better, we can responsibly relax those limits.”

Balancing Freedom and Responsibility
Observers see the erotica policy as part of a broader industry shift toward personalization and competitive differentiation. Analysts suggest OpenAI’s move mirrors Elon Musk’s xAI, which recently introduced sexually explicit chatbots to Grok, its AI platform.
Business professor Rob Lalka from Tulane University told BBC News that the change also reflects pressure to sustain growth. “No company has ever had the kind of adoption OpenAI saw with ChatGPT,” he said. “To maintain market dominance, they need to keep evolving—even in controversial ways.”
The Wider AI Ethics Debate
Altman’s remarks highlight the tension between creative freedom, market competition, and ethical responsibility in the fast-growing AI sector. The FTC and U.S. lawmakers are now exploring regulations that would hold chatbot developers liable for harmful user interactions, especially involving minors.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently vetoed a bill that would have restricted AI companions for children, arguing instead that it’s “imperative that adolescents learn how to safely interact with AI systems.”
As OpenAI prepares to roll out erotica access for verified adults, the company finds itself at the crossroads of innovation and accountability. While Altman champions digital maturity and personal choice, critics warn that loosening restrictions could blur ethical lines in an industry already under scrutiny. How OpenAI enforces age limits and mental health safeguards may ultimately determine whether this bold experiment marks progress — or a setback — for responsible AI governance.
