PM Lawrence Wong praises U.S.-led peace plan as a “breakthrough” and pledges Singapore’s support for Gaza rebuilding.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has welcomed the landmark agreement between Israel and Hamas to begin the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan — a deal hailed globally as a potential turning point after two years of devastating conflict in Gaza.

PM Wong Commends Peace Efforts

In a Facebook post on Friday (Oct 10), Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said he “welcomes the agreement by Israel and Hamas” to commence the first phase of President Trump’s peace initiative. “It has been two long years since the Oct 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas. Far too many lives have been lost, and the suffering has been immense,” he wrote, acknowledging the immense toll of the conflict.

Mr Wong commended the “leadership of President Donald Trump” and recognised the “invaluable efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye” in facilitating the breakthrough. He described the deal as a crucial first step toward ending years of hostilities between the two sides.

Singapore Offers Capacity-Building Support

PM Wong affirmed that Singapore “stands ready” to assist in Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction, highlighting the country’s long-standing support for peacebuilding and humanitarian capacity-building in the region.

“We will contribute in whatever way we can to ensure that both Israelis and Palestinians can live in lasting peace and security,” he said.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) echoed the Prime Minister’s statement, urging all parties to make “further progress to resolve outstanding issues” and to create conditions conducive for Gaza’s rebuilding.

Details of Trump’s Peace Plan

The peace framework — backed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — outlines a phased process beginning with a ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoners, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to an agreed-upon line in Gaza.

“This means that all hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” President Trump announced on Truth Social.

The next phases of the plan envision a transitional administration for Gaza led by an international body, potentially involving the Palestinian Authority following reforms, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Global Response to the Agreement

The ceasefire plan has received widespread international backing. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it a “momentous opportunity” for a credible political path forward. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer — whose government was among the first to recognise a Palestinian state — urged full and immediate implementation.

Egypt, which hosted indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, hailed the deal as a “pivotal moment,” while Malaysia described it as “a crucial step to ending the genocide, destruction, and starvation in Gaza.”

A Path Toward Lasting Stability

Though details of post-war governance remain uncertain, world leaders view this agreement as the most promising breakthrough in years. PM Wong’s statement underscores Singapore’s consistent foreign policy — supporting peaceful resolution, humanitarian rebuilding, and regional stability.

For both Singaporeans and Indonesians, the move represents renewed hope for stability in the Middle East — a region whose peace affects global security and economic confidence.

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement marks a cautious yet hopeful moment after years of violence. Singapore’s proactive stance reflects its enduring commitment to international peacebuilding and its readiness to contribute meaningfully to Gaza’s reconstruction — aligning Southeast Asia’s diplomacy with a shared vision of stability, compassion, and cooperation.
