Latest tranche funds mobile education unit and medical support for displaced families

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has delivered S$1.2 million in humanitarian aid to Palestinian evacuees in Egypt, supporting urgent medical care and education for children uprooted by the Gaza conflict.

Aid for Medical and Educational Needs

On September 21, the SRC announced that its latest aid package included S$440,000 worth of tents and S$758,000 allocated for essential medical and educational services. The funds will provide medical consumables and equipment for about 4,000 evacuees and their companions, as well as a mobile education unit to serve 2,000 Palestinian children housed across 11 accommodation centres managed by the Egyptian Red Crescent.

Witnessed During State Visit

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, on a state visit to Egypt from September 19 to 22, witnessed the symbolic handover of donations. He also became the first head of state to visit the Egyptian Red Crescent headquarters in Cairo, where he and his spouse, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, toured relief facilities, including a mock-up of tents provided by Singapore.

Supporting Families and Children

Benjamin William, SRC’s secretary-general and CEO, emphasized the significance of this tranche: “Access to education and healthcare is not only a fundamental need but also a lifeline of dignity and hope for those rebuilding their lives.” The education unit will deliver non-formal lessons and life skills to children, aiming to restore a sense of normalcy and ease the psychological toll of prolonged displacement.

Egypt-Singapore Cooperation

Dr Amal Emam, CEO of the Egyptian Red Crescent, highlighted that the aid targets urgent needs such as food, shelter, and medical supplies for displaced families. She noted that while the contributions may seem like “a drop in the ocean,” the support from Singapore is deeply valued.

Long-Term Commitment to Gaza Relief

With this latest donation, Singapore has now contributed over S$23 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza since October 2023. SRC has also deployed relief teams and provided supplies ranging from hygiene kits to water filtration systems. An additional S$500,000 has been channelled through other Red Cross Red Crescent partners, reinforcing Singapore’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian relief in the region.

Broader Regional Impact

For both Singapore and Indonesia, the aid underscores the region’s proactive role in responding to humanitarian crises. It reflects not only solidarity with Palestinian families but also the importance of international partnerships in tackling the long-term effects of displacement, education loss, and health challenges in conflict zones.

Singapore’s latest humanitarian contribution highlights the growing role Southeast Asian nations play in global crises. By funding medical relief and education for displaced Palestinians, Singapore strengthens regional compassion and global cooperation, setting an example of practical aid that uplifts vulnerable communities.
