Education Minister launches urgent investigation after 10-year-old cancer patient suffers repeated assaults
A bullying case in Johor involving a 10-year-old cancer patient has sparked nationwide outrage, pushing Malaysia’s education authorities to promise swift action.
Child Victim of Brutal Assaults
The boy, Izzul Islam Azuan, has been battling a rare form of nasal cancer for two years. Despite his recovery reaching about 80%, he became the target of two separate bullying incidents this year. The first occurred in February at a Johor Bahru religious school, where he was allegedly beaten, kicked, forced to strip naked, and later diagnosed with a concussion. His mother, Siti Suhana Misdi, 39, said the attack was linked to a Standard 6 student’s anger after Izzul’s sister rejected his romantic advances.
Police Reluctance Sparks Anger
Although Suhana lodged a police report in February, officers deemed the case “unsuitable” for an investigation, citing the perpetrator’s age. Instead, the families were called into a meeting. Doctors later confirmed that Izzul required hospitalisation from March 12 to 26, with recovery expected to take up to three years, leaving him at risk of seizures.
Second Assault in August
On August 7, Izzul was again allegedly attacked—this time by a different classmate at his national school in Skudai. He was struck on the head and required further medical care. A second police report was filed on August 14, highlighting Suhana’s fears that her son is repeatedly targeted due to his perceived physical weakness. “He fainted this morning and is not like his usual self,” she told reporters.
Minister Orders Immediate Probe
Malaysia’s Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek vowed on August 18 that the case would be “investigated promptly,” stressing that there is zero tolerance for bullying in schools. Johor’s Education and Information Committee Chairman, Aznan Tamin, confirmed that state authorities are reviewing the complaints.
National Spotlight on Bullying
The case comes amid wider scrutiny of bullying in Malaysia. Public anger surged last month after the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious in her Sabah school dormitory, allegedly following bullying. The Attorney-General’s Chambers has since filed charges, while Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians not to politicize such tragedies but insisted that bullying “must be completely eradicated.”
Royal Call for Reform
Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, has directed the federal government to launch a comprehensive anti-bullying campaign starting in primary schools. He warned that unchecked abuse risks creating “a generation lacking respect and compassion.” The initiative aims to instill values of discipline, empathy, and mutual respect from a young age.
The plight of Izzul Islam underscores systemic challenges in addressing bullying, from inadequate enforcement to cultural tolerance of schoolyard violence. With ministerial, judicial, and royal attention now focused on the issue, Malaysia faces a defining moment: whether it can safeguard its children and dismantle the entrenched culture of abuse that has shaken public confidence in its schools.
