Partnership aims to build tropical crop excellence centre, enhance food security, and diversify beyond palm oil
Genting Plantations Berhad (GENP) is venturing into sustainable agribusiness with a landmark RM525 million joint venture with China’s Shouguang Vegetable Industry Group to develop a centre of excellence for tropical vegetables in Johor.
A Landmark Agricultural Investment
The partnership will develop a 70-acre (28.33 hectares) centre of excellence for tropical vegetable crops in Kulai, Johor. The project, designed to boost sustainable agriculture and strengthen Malaysia’s food security, will be led through two new joint venture companies: JV Technology Company and JV Operating Company.
JV Structure and Capital Commitment
GENP’s indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, ACGT Vegetable AgVentures Sdn Bhd (AVA), will hold 60% equity, while Shouguang Vegetable Science and Technology Sdn Bhd (SVST), a Malaysian arm of the Chinese group, will hold 40%. Together, they will commit over RM525 million, with RM210 million allocated to the technology entity and RM315 million to operations. GENP’s contribution will be in cash, while SVST provides technology and expertise.
Harnessing Global Expertis
The venture will combine GENP’s genomics capabilities with Shouguang’s global leadership in seed technology. Shouguang, established in 1998, is a China national key enterprise in agricultural industrialisation, with integrated operations spanning seed breeding, cultivation, processing, logistics, and food manufacturing. Its extensive germplasm library will play a critical role in developing high-yield, climate-resilient crop varieties.

Planned Facilities and Operations
The centre will include:
- A vegetable seed breeding programme and R&D facilities
- A showcase hub for agricultural technology and innovation
- Production greenhouses and a food processing facility
- Import and export operations for agricultural products and inputs
These facilities are expected to accelerate innovation and position Johor as a hub for advanced tropical agribusiness.
Strategic Diversification Beyond Palm Oil
For GENP, the collaboration marks a significant diversification strategy beyond palm oil. By venturing into vegetable seed production and high-value crops, the group aims to strengthen business resilience and unlock new revenue streams. GENP highlighted that the investment would be funded through a mix of internally generated funds and bank borrowings, with final structuring to be confirmed.
Outlook and Impact
While the JV is not expected to materially affect GENP’s 2025 earnings per share, the long-term benefits could reshape Malaysia’s agricultural sector by enhancing food self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports, and boosting Johor’s role in regional food production. The project also reflects growing cooperation between Malaysia and China in sustainable agribusiness innovation.
Genting Plantations’ RM525 million joint venture with Shouguang marks a transformative step in Malaysia’s agricultural landscape. By merging genomics expertise with cutting-edge seed technology, the project promises to deliver sustainable solutions for food security while charting a new growth path for GENP beyond palm oil. For Malaysians and Singaporeans alike, this initiative signals stronger regional collaboration in food resilience and agritech.
