MFA warns of mass civilian displacement, urges immediate ceasefire and release of hostages

Singapore has voiced strong concern over Israel’s plan to expand military operations in Gaza, warning that such action will worsen the humanitarian crisis and lead to further mass displacement.

MFA’s Strong Statement

On 10 August, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said Israel’s security cabinet plan to expand its military operations in Gaza is “dangerous and unacceptable.” The MFA stressed that the move will worsen the already dire humanitarian situation and displace more civilians.

Call for Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Singapore reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and urged Hamas to release all remaining hostages without conditions. MFA added that Israel must fulfill its international humanitarian obligations by removing all restrictions on aid and facilitating the full, unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance.

Protecting Civilians and Infrastructure

The MFA emphasised that all parties must safeguard civilian lives and infrastructure in line with international humanitarian law, especially those accessing humanitarian supplies. The statement called for a resumption of negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire.

Details of Israel’s Plan and Global Response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on 8 August that the security cabinet had approved a full-scale military takeover of Gaza City. The operation is expected to involve ground troops in densely populated areas. Hamas condemned the decision as a “new war crime,” while the UN labelled it a “dangerous escalation” likely to cause further forced displacement, killings, and destruction.

International Condemnation

Beyond the UN, Germany has also taken a strong stance, halting the export of military equipment to Israel that could be used in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that forced displacement is illegal under international law and that the plan could worsen the catastrophic humanitarian situation.

Singapore’s firm condemnation of Israel’s expanded Gaza offensive reflects growing international alarm over the humanitarian consequences. With the UN and key global players voicing opposition, the call for a ceasefire and unimpeded aid access underscores the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further civilian suffering.
