Extreme rainfall triggers deadly floods, landslides, and mass evacuations across Beijing and neighboring provinces.

Relentless rainstorms have battered northern China, leaving at least 30 dead in Beijing and forcing the evacuation of over 80,000 residents. Authorities warn of ongoing risks as the city continues to struggle with severe flooding and landslides.

Deadly Flooding Across Beijing

State media confirmed that 30 people have died in Beijing following days of torrential rains that turned streets into rivers and swept away cars. The worst-hit areas include Miyun district, where 28 deaths were reported, and Yanqing, with two fatalities. The mountainous regions of Huairou and Fangshan also suffered significant damage.

Mass Evacuations and Damage

Authorities have evacuated more than 80,000 residents, including 17,000 from Miyun. Floodwaters damaged dozens of roads and cut electricity to over 130 villages, prompting emergency crews to work around the clock to restore services and clear debris. Schools, tourist sites, rural homestays, and campsites have been ordered to close amid safety concerns.

Landslides and Regional Impact

In neighboring Hebei province, a landslide near Chengde killed four people, with eight still missing. Other provinces, including Jilin and Shandong, have also reported casualties and damage to infrastructure due to the ongoing storm system.

Xi Jinping Urges Maximum Response

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an “all-out effort” to rescue missing persons, relocate residents from flood-prone zones, and minimize casualties. He emphasized preparing for worst-case scenarios as the rain continues to pose risks of flash floods, mudslides, and additional landslides.

Climate Change and Extreme Weather

The flooding adds to a series of recent natural disasters across China, highlighting the growing threat of extreme weather events intensified by climate change. While China is the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, it also aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, balancing rapid industrial growth with environmental challenges.

The deadly floods in Beijing and surrounding provinces underscore the devastating impact of extreme weather, with lives lost, infrastructure damaged, and thousands displaced. As rescue operations continue, authorities face mounting pressure to strengthen disaster preparedness amid climate-driven risks.
