57-year-old pleaded guilty to child ill-treatment after kicking student and causing a bruise
A former preschool teacher in Singapore has pleaded guilty to kicking a four-year-old girl during class time, resulting in a visible bruise on the child’s shin. The incident, which took place in April 2024, has drawn renewed attention to safeguarding measures in early childhood education.
Incident Inside the Kindergarten
On April 2, 2024, Alamelu Paramaguru—then a teacher in a Kindergarten 1 class and known as “Teacher Meloo”—was preparing children for their nap after lunch. She asked a group of seven students to move from a classroom corner to place sanitized cots. While six complied, one girl remained seated on the floor.
As Alamelu moved a cot into position, she turned and felt the child had nearly caused her to trip, though she did not actually stumble or fall. In a moment of anger, she forcefully kicked the girl’s right shin and shouted at her to “sit properly,” as confirmed in court proceedings. The child hugged her leg in pain but was ignored and further scolded by the teacher.
Bruise Discovered and Report Filed
Later that evening, the young girl told her mother about the incident. Her mother noticed a visible bruise and promptly reported it to other school staff, then filed a police report that night. The girl was treated at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where a 1cm by 1cm bruise was documented, and she was granted two days of medical leave.

Due to a gag order, the name of the kindergarten involved has not been released to protect the victim’s identity.
Legal Proceedings and Guilty Plea
On July 22, 2025, Alamelu, now 57, pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treating a child under the Children and Young Persons Act. She initially told police she could not recall the incident but later said her foot may have “unconsciously” made contact with the girl’s leg.
She was charged officially on July 31, 2024, and granted bail of S$15,000. The court will hear mitigation and deliver sentencing in August. If convicted, Alamelu faces up to 8 years’ jail, a fine of up to S$8,000, or both.
No Longer in the Early Childhood Sector
Following the police investigation, the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) suspended Alamelu’s teaching credentials. She eventually resigned from her position and is no longer employed in the preschool sector, according to ECDA statements provided to media outlets.

The case has reignited concerns around teacher conduct and the protection of vulnerable children in learning environments.
Safeguarding Children in Schools
This case underscores the importance of institutional accountability and vigilance in early childhood settings. Advocates are calling for stronger training in conflict management, clearer abuse reporting protocols, and more rigorous psychological assessments for preschool staff.
Ensuring the safety of children during their formative years must remain a top priority for educators, regulators, and parents alike.
The case of a former preschool teacher kicking a four-year-old girl in Singapore has sparked serious reflection on safety within early education. It serves as a reminder of the trust placed in educators and the critical systems needed to protect children across schools in both Singapore and Indonesia, where similar educational standards are being developed.
